The short answer

For constipation on Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy or Ozempic (semaglutide), the Dubai Health Authority's guideline starts with more fluids, more fibre and exercise. If those don't help, it adds a bulk-forming laxative. The EU labels list it as very common on Wegovy and on Mounjaro for weight loss. On Wegovy 2.4 mg it affected 24% vs 11% on placebo.

Before you go further
  • Label facts here come from the European (EU) labels for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic. We didn't check the UAE label text.
  • The UAE guidance is the Dubai Health Authority's constipation guideline for doctors. Some self-care advice comes from MedlinePlus, a US health service, because we found no UAE patient page.
  • Laxatives are named by type, not brand. We don't name, link or rank sellers.

How common is constipation on Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic?

The EU leaflets list constipation as very common (more than 1 in 10 people) on Wegovy, and on Mounjaro for weight loss.1,2

On Ozempic it is common (up to 1 in 10).3 On Mounjaro (tirzepatide) it is common in people treated for type 2 diabetes. The EU label gives no constipation percentage for the weight trials.1

On Wegovy (semaglutide) 2.4 mg, 24.2% had constipation over 68 weeks, against 11.1% on placebo (a dummy injection). It was mild to moderate, but lasted longer than other stomach effects. A typical bout lasted 47 days. It was mainly seen while the dose was going up.2

Dubai's guideline lists fewer than 3 bowel movements a week, straining, and lumpy or hard stools among the signs.4 Other side effects are in Guide 5: side effects and risks.

What does Dubai's health authority say helps?

Dubai's guideline starts with changes to what you eat, more fluids and exercise, and a regular time for the toilet each day.4

It recommends 20 to 25 g of fibre a day, and says fibre can take several weeks to work.4 MedlinePlus says to add fibre slowly, because it can cause bloating and gas, and to drink plenty of water with it.5

A small US trial, not of GLP‑1 users, gave 2 kiwifruit or 100 g of prunes a day to adults with long-term constipation. Both eased straining over 4 weeks.6 The EU Mounjaro leaflet also says to drink plenty of fluids if vomiting or diarrhoea risk dehydration.1

Which laxative, and for how long?

Dubai's guideline recommends a bulk-forming laxative when diet and lifestyle changes haven't worked, then an osmotic laxative if that fails.4

The osmotic ones it names are polyethylene glycol and lactulose. It also lists glycerin suppositories.4 MedlinePlus says not to take a laxative for more than 1 week without asking your doctor. It also says not to take one with severe stomach pain, nausea or vomiting.5

The guideline asks doctors to check whether constipation began after starting a new medicine.4 For significant stomach symptoms, the EU Wegovy label lets the doctor delay the next dose increase or go back a dose.2 The EU leaflets say not to stop without talking to your doctor.1,2,3

When is constipation on a GLP‑1 serious?

The EU Wegovy and Ozempic leaflets list bowel obstruction, which they describe as a severe form of constipation with stomach ache, bloating or vomiting.2,3

Its frequency isn't known; the cases were reported after the medicines went on sale. The EU Mounjaro leaflet lists slower stomach emptying as uncommon, but not bowel obstruction.1,2,3

Long-lasting constipation can lead to faecal impaction, a lump of hard stool stuck in the rectum. Leaks of watery stool can be a sign. A health professional removes it.7

What do people on Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic report about constipation?

From public patient forums: 10 Reddit threads in r/Zepbound, r/Wegovy, r/Semaglutide, r/Ozempic and r/MounjaroUK, read in October 2026. Personal reports, not medical evidence.

What people describe

  • Matches the label Several say it began in the first weeks or after a dose increase. The EU Wegovy label says constipation was mainly seen while the dose was going up, and that it lasted longer than other stomach effects.2
  • Not studied A few say it started only months in.
  • Matches US MedlinePlus Several describe stool so hard it got stuck, and a few needed emergency care for it. MedlinePlus says faecal impaction is most often seen in people constipated for a long time.7
  • Matches US MedlinePlus A few had watery stool while still badly blocked. MedlinePlus lists leaks of watery stool as a common symptom of faecal impaction.7

Advice people share

  • Matches Dubai's guideline and a trial Many start with more water and fibre, and many eat prunes or 2 kiwifruit a day. Dubai's guideline advises fluids and fibre. A small US trial, not of GLP‑1 users, found kiwifruit and prunes eased straining.4,6
  • Matches US MedlinePlus Most replies in threads about blockages say not to let it run past a few days. MedlinePlus says to contact a doctor after 3 days without a bowel movement.5
  • EU guidance says otherwise Some take stimulant laxatives such as senna every day for weeks. The European Medicines Agency says senna should not be taken for longer than 1 week, and that longer use can stop the bowels working properly.8
  • Label says otherwise A few skip or put off GLP‑1 doses on their own. The EU leaflets say not to stop without talking to your doctor. The EU Wegovy label leaves dose changes for stomach symptoms to the doctor.1,2,3
Get help now: call 998 for an ambulance, or 999 for police.10 Call for severe stomach pain or pressure, severe or persistent vomiting, vomiting blood, or bleeding that will not stop. MedlinePlus, a US health service, lists these as emergency warning signs.9 Dubai's guideline sends heavy bleeding from the bottom (massive rectal bleeding) to the emergency department.4

Contact a doctor right away if constipation comes on suddenly with stomach cramps and you can't pass wind or stool. MedlinePlus says not to take laxatives then.7 Also contact a doctor if you have had no bowel movement for 3 days, are bloated or in pain, are being sick, or see blood in your stool.5 Dubai's guideline also sends blood in the stool, and severe constipation that doesn't respond to treatment, to a family doctor or specialist.4
