Can I fly into Dubai with my Ozempic pen?
Yes. The UAE's prior-approval rules for travellers cover narcotic and controlled medicines, so a pen of Ozempic (semaglutide) needs no permit. Carry your prescription or a medical report and no more than a three-month supply, says the Ministry of Health and Prevention's traveller guidance. Keep the pen in your hand luggage, not the hold.
Do you need a permit?
No permit is needed, because the ministry's personal-import approval is for narcotic and controlled medicines, and its FAQ says other medicines can be carried without any prior submission.1
The ministry confirmed in 2018 that non-controlled medicines need no prior approval,2 and Gulf News said in 2024 that travellers are "free to travel with" non-controlled medicines.3 Some ministry services have since moved to the Emirates Drug Establishment.4 Controlled medicines are different and need approval before you travel.3
What paperwork, and how much?
Bring a prescription or medical report and no more than three months' supply, the limit in the ministry's FAQ, although the same FAQ also mentions six months for prescription-only medicines.1
The ministry's guidance says a prescription should show your full name, the medicine, dose, form and length of treatment, the date and the doctor's name. It should be issued within the last three months and stamped by the clinic.1 Three months of Ozempic is about 3 pens, since each 4-dose pen lasts 4 weeks.5
How do you keep the pen safe on the flight?
Keep pens in your hand luggage, because aircraft holds can get too hot or too cold, and keep them away from ice packs so they don't freeze.6
Lilly says airport X-rays are not known to affect tirzepatide.6 Ozempic's instructions say to keep the pen with you, never leave it in a car, and carry a spare pen and needles.7 An opened Ozempic pen lasts 6 weeks below 30 °C or in a fridge.5 UAE heat is covered in Can I leave Mounjaro out of the fridge in UAE heat? and Guide 8.
