Why does food taste different or disgust me on Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic?
A changed sense of taste is a listed side effect of Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide). The EU labels call it common (up to 1 in 10) on Wegovy and uncommon (up to 1 in 100) on Mounjaro and Ozempic. All three labels say the medicines reduce food cravings. For nausea, Dubai's health authority advises bland foods and no fatty food.
- Label facts here come from the European (EU) labels for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic. We didn't check the UAE label text.
- In the EU label, Ozempic is a type 2 diabetes medicine, not a weight-loss one.
- The UAE advice on food is the Dubai Health Authority's nausea and vomiting guideline, written for doctors.
Is a change in taste a side effect of Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic?
Yes. The EU Wegovy (semaglutide) leaflet lists a “change in the way food or drink tastes” as common, affecting up to 1 in 10 people.2
The EU Mounjaro (tirzepatide) leaflet lists a “changed sense of taste” as uncommon, affecting up to 1 in 100 people.1 The EU Ozempic leaflet also lists a change in taste as uncommon.3 The Wegovy label says taste changes were seen mainly while the dose was going up.2 All three leaflets list burping and reflux as common.1–3
None of the three EU labels lists food aversion, or disgust at particular foods, as a side effect.1–3 To pass one on to the regulator, see how to report a side effect in the UAE. Every listed effect is in Guide 5: side effects and risks.
Why might foods you used to like put you off?
All three EU labels say these medicines reduce food cravings, and the Wegovy label says animal studies suggest semaglutide may affect the brain’s reward system.1–3
The EU Mounjaro label says tirzepatide also reduces preferences for high-sugar and high-fat foods.1 The Wegovy and Ozempic labels say semaglutide reduces the preference for high-fat foods.2,3 In one Wegovy trial, the label found no clear effect on craving for sweet food after 104 weeks.2
In a 16-week Slovenian trial, 30 women with obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome took semaglutide 1 mg or a placebo (dummy injection). Semaglutide raised their scores on a taste recognition test.4
In an online survey of 411 people on Wegovy, Ozempic or Mounjaro, recruited through online support groups for GLP‑1 users, 21.3% said sweet tastes seemed stronger. 22.6% said the same of salty tastes.5 A survey like this can’t show the medicine caused the change.5
What can you eat when food puts you off?
For nausea, the Dubai Health Authority’s guideline advises lots of fluids in small sips, then foods with a lot of fluid in them, such as soup.6
If those go down well, it suggests soft, bland foods such as plain yoghurt. Bread or crackers can help settle the stomach, and some people find ginger helps.6 It says to avoid fatty food, which can make nausea worse, and strong smells such as perfume.6 It also says cool fizzy drinks are better tolerated than still or hot ones.6
All three EU leaflets warn that feeling or being sick can dehydrate you, and say to drink enough fluids.1–3 The guideline lists side effects of medicines among the common causes of nausea.6 For significant stomach symptoms, the EU Wegovy label lets the doctor delay the next dose increase or go back a dose.2 The leaflets say not to stop the medicine without first discussing it with your doctor.1–3

What people describe
- Matches the labels Many say sweets, fizzy drinks and processed foods now taste far too sweet, and several say other food and drink taste different too. The EU leaflets list a change in taste, as common on Wegovy and uncommon on Mounjaro and Ozempic.1–3
- Matches the labels Many say fried, greasy or rich food no longer appeals, or brings on heartburn or burping. The EU labels say both tirzepatide and semaglutide reduce the preference for high-fat food, and the leaflets list burping and reflux as common.1–3
- Not studied Many name eggs, meat or coffee as foods that now put them off. We found no study of aversions to particular foods, and the EU labels don’t list them.1–3
- Not studied Several say aversions were worst in the first weeks or after a dose increase, then eased over months. A few say some never went. We found no study of how long aversions last.
Advice people share
- Matches Dubai’s guideline Many lean on soup and plain, bland foods on bad days. For nausea, Dubai’s guideline suggests soup first, then soft, bland foods.6
- Not studied Several save richer meals for the last days before the next injection, when appetite returns. We found no study of timing meals within the dose week.
- Matches the leaflets Several say to drink plenty of water. All three EU leaflets say to drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration.1–3
- Matches the Wegovy label Several say not to move up a dose until sickness settles, and to ask the prescriber about going back a dose. For significant stomach symptoms, the EU Wegovy label says the doctor could consider exactly that.2 We found no such line in the EU Mounjaro label.1
- severe or persistent vomiting
- vomiting blood
- severe stomach pain or pressure
- fainting, or sudden dizziness or weakness
- confusion or unusual behaviour
Contact a doctor right away for severe stomach pain that won’t go away, which may spread to your back. The EU leaflets say to see a doctor immediately, as it can be a sign of an inflamed pancreas.1,2 Dubai’s guideline tells doctors to consider urgent referral for green vomit, or stool that has blood in it or is black like tar.6 It refers people who vomit repeatedly for more than a day or two, or who are dehydrated, to a family doctor or specialist.6
