Is Ozempic for weight loss in the UAE?

What we checked16 sources, each one opened and linked to the sentence it supportsLast checked 18 Oct 2026 · Next review due 18 Oct 2027 · How we write
The short answer

No. In the UAE, Ozempic (semaglutide) is approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. The same medicine is approved for weight as Wegovy, at up to 2.4 mg a week, against Ozempic's top dose of 2 mg. Using Ozempic for weight would be off-label, and Dubai's basic insurance plan excludes weight-loss medicines.

Before you go further
  • GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in the UAE and should only be used under a doctor's supervision, Abu Dhabi's Department of Health says.1
  • We don't name, link or rank sellers, and nothing here is for sale. Official prices are on the prices page.

Why do people call Ozempic a weight-loss drug?

Semaglutide is the medicine. Ozempic and Wegovy are two brands of it, and in the UAE Ozempic is listed for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy for obesity.2,3

Three things made the Ozempic name stick:

  • It came first. Europe approved Ozempic in February 2018 and Wegovy in January 2022.4,5 We found no published UAE approval dates for either.
  • The weight loss showed up in diabetes trials. In SUSTAIN 1, 388 adults with type 2 diabetes lost 3.7 kg (8 lb) on Ozempic 0.5 mg and 4.5 kg (10 lb) on 1 mg over 30 weeks, against 1.0 kg on a dummy injection.6
  • Demand ran ahead of the weight brand. Novo Nordisk, the maker, told The National in 2024 that it brought Wegovy to the UAE "specifically for obesity, and Ozempic is for diabetes".7

How the two brands compare is in Guide 2, and all the UAE brands are in its family tree.

What does "off-label" mean?

Off-label means using a medicine for a purpose its approval doesn't cover, judged against the approval in the country where it is used.8

That wording is the European Medicines Agency's; we found no UAE regulator's own definition, and no UAE rule written about doctors prescribing off-label. A UAE-licensed doctor's prescription is still needed,1 and Daman's GLP‑1 guideline says treatment decisions remain the doctor's responsibility.2

What does that mean for you in the UAE?

Ozempic for weight is unlikely to be insured, stops at a lower dose than Wegovy, and has run short before.

  • Insurance. Dubai's basic Essential Benefits Plan excludes "pharmacological weight reduction regimens".9 Daman lists Ozempic for type 2 diabetes only, and pays for obesity medicines only within Abu Dhabi's Thiqa Obesity Program.2 More in Is Ozempic covered by insurance in the UAE?
  • The dose. Ozempic's label stops at 2 mg a week.6 Wegovy pens in the UAE go up to 2.4 mg.10 Europe also approves Wegovy 7.2 mg, but the UAE had not as of March 2026.11,12 See Is Wegovy 7.2 mg available in the UAE?
  • Supply. In April 2023 pharmacies in Dubai and Sharjah told The National that "genuine diabetes patients can't get the medication".13 Novo Nordisk said it had "big problems" with supply in 2023 and late 2022.7 We found no UAE rule telling doctors to keep Ozempic for diabetes.
  • Safety. It is the same medicine, so the side effects below apply to both brands.6

Mounjaro is different. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is listed in the UAE for type 2 diabetes and for weight, so this question doesn't apply to it.2,3 See Is Zepbound available in the UAE? and how the brands compare.

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are very common. The EU Ozempic leaflet lists feeling sick and diarrhoea in more than 1 in 10 people.6
  • Inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis) is uncommon, up to 1 in 100, on the EU Ozempic leaflet.6
  • Low blood sugar is very common when Ozempic is taken with insulin or a sulfonylurea, a type of diabetes tablet.6
  • Pregnancy. The EU label says stop semaglutide at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.6

What does a doctor weigh?

A doctor weighs your health against the UAE rules, and whether a medicine approved for weight would suit you better.

  • Your BMI. Abu Dhabi's standard allows GLP‑1s from a BMI of 30 with a weight-related condition, or over 40.15 Dubai's guideline allows a BMI over 30, or 27 to 29.9 with a condition, after lifestyle changes alone haven't worked.16
  • Whether it is working. Abu Dhabi's standard continues a GLP‑1 beyond 6 months only if you have lost at least 5% of your starting weight.15
  • Your other medicines and plans, such as diabetes treatment that can cause low blood sugar, or a pregnancy.6
