Can I take Mounjaro during Ramadan?

The short answer

Often yes, with planning. International Ramadan guidance from IDF-DAR (2021) says people with type 2 diabetes on a GLP‑1 such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide) need no change if the dose was settled at least 2 to 4 weeks before Ramadan. UAE doctors advise agreeing any dose change before Ramadan starts, not midway.

Before you go further
  • Most of the evidence on GLP‑1s in Ramadan comes from people with type 2 diabetes, on older medicines such as liraglutide.1
  • Whether an injection affects the fast is a religious question; what named authorities have said is in Does a GLP‑1 injection break my fast?

When should the dose be settled?

IDF-DAR 2021 says GLP‑1 medicines need no further changes in Ramadan if the dose was raised to its target at least 2 to 4 weeks before.1

A UK pharmacy journal, The Pharmacist, suggested in July 2026 4 to 6 weeks, so stomach side effects can settle, and holding off a dose rise if Ramadan is close.2 Gulf News, reporting UAE doctors' advice in February 2026, said any dosing decision should be made with a doctor "before Ramadan begins, not improvised midway through the month". One doctor said patients who are stable on their dose "can usually continue without adjustment".3

When should you inject?

The Pharmacist, a UK pharmacy journal, suggests injecting after Iftar, which may ease nausea, or after Suhoor, which may help you feel full through the fasting day.2

Keep the same injection day, and avoid changing the day and the dose in the same week.2 Tablets are different. The Wegovy pill is taken on an empty stomach with a little water, then nothing for 30 minutes,4 so in Ramadan it fits at Suhoor, before dawn.2

Which risks go up when you fast on Mounjaro?

Fasting on a GLP‑1 raises the risk of dehydration, and of low blood sugar for people who also take insulin or a sulfonylurea.2,3

UAE doctors suggest two to three litres of water spread between Iftar and Suhoor, and not skipping Suhoor.3 They advise a medical review for persistent vomiting, severe stomach pain or signs of dehydration.3 The Pharmacist says to break the fast straight away for low blood sugar.2 Food and daily life on a GLP‑1 are covered in Guide 8.
