How should you eat at Iftar, Suhoor and Eid on Mounjaro or Ozempic?
Breaking the fast gently, why Suhoor matters more, protein and water when you eat only twice a day, and the three days of Eid.
Written for the United Arab Emirates. Other country versions are coming.
Break the fast slowly: water, one or two dates, then a small plate with protein and vegetables. UAE doctors say a large, heavy Iftar is a main trigger of nausea on these medicines, and that skipping Suhoor is "strongly discouraged". Drink 2 to 3 litres between Iftar and Suhoor, and keep Eid portions small.
Key takeaways
- UAE doctors quoted by Gulf News in February 2026 named a large, heavy Iftar as one of the main triggers of stomach side effects on GLP-1 medicines.1
- The same doctors said skipping Suhoor is "strongly discouraged", because reduced appetite can lead to fatigue, dizziness and dehydration during the fast.1
- The international Ramadan guidelines say Iftar should start with plenty of water and 1 to 3 small dates.2
- Those guidelines warn that the 3-day Eid ul-Fitr festival brings a risk of overindulgence, and advise a check-up with your doctor after Ramadan.2
- A US nutrition advisory on GLP-1 medicines notes that vomiting is more likely after large meals, and suggests eating protein-rich foods first.3

How should you break the fast on a GLP-1?
Slowly, and small. UAE doctors told Gulf News that a large, heavy Iftar is “one of the main triggers” of stomach side effects, and advised smaller portions eaten slowly.1
- GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in the UAE. They should only be used under medical supervision, with a prescription from a doctor licensed in the UAE.4
- Label facts here come from the EU label (EMA), the UK label or the US label (FDA), named each time. We could not find the UAE pack leaflets online, so check the leaflet in your own pack.
- Whether and how to take your dose during Ramadan is a separate question. Plan it with your doctor before Ramadan starts; our Ramadan post covers timing.1
- Every risk of these medicines is in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.
- This post describes labels, rules and trials. It is not a plan for your treatment, and no dose or brand guarantees any result.
These medicines slow how fast your stomach empties.5,6 After a full day without food, a big plate can sit heavily, and that is when nausea, bloating and reflux tend to flare.1
| Meal | What UAE doctors suggested (Feb 2026) |
|---|---|
| Iftar | Water first, one or two dates, a light soup. Then half a plate of vegetables, a quarter lean protein (grilled fish, chicken or legumes), a quarter wholegrains1 |
| Suhoor | Eggs or Greek yoghurt, oats or wholegrain bread, nuts and seeds, fruit, and plenty of water1 |
| Go easy on | Fried food, heavy pastries, sugary drinks; salty food at Suhoor, which adds to thirst1 |
From three UAE doctors quoted in Gulf News, 16 Feb 2026. General advice, not a diet plan.
The international Ramadan guidelines also say to start Iftar with plenty of water and 1 to 3 small dried or fresh dates.2 A US advisory on eating with GLP‑1 medicines adds that vomiting is more likely after large meals.3
Why does Suhoor matter more on a GLP-1?
Because the medicine dulls hunger, so it is easy to skip. UAE doctors said that can lead to fatigue, dizziness, dehydration, headaches and poor concentration during the fast.1
“Skipping Suhoor is strongly discouraged,” one doctor said.1 Foods that release energy slowly help: eggs or yoghurt for protein, oats or wholegrain bread, nuts and fruit.1
If you take a daily tablet, Suhoor gets complicated. The Wegovy pill needs an empty stomach and a 30-minute wait before eating or drinking; Foundayo has no food rules.7,8 Ask your doctor how to fit it in.
How do you get enough protein in two meals?
Put protein first on the plate. The Ramadan guidelines set protein at no less than 1.2 g per kg of adjusted body weight a day for people with diabetes.2
For someone whose adjusted weight is 70 kg, 1.2 g/kg is about 84 g of protein a day, split between Iftar and Suhoor. A US advisory says 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg has been proposed during active weight loss, and suggests eating protein-rich foods first in a meal.3 It also gives a simpler target of 80 to 120 g a day.3
The same advisory pairs protein with strength training at least 3 times a week, plus at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.3 If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor before you raise your protein.
Protein helps protect muscle while you lose weight. Our post on Mounjaro, muscle loss and protein has more.
How do you stay hydrated between Iftar and Suhoor?
Aim for 2 to 3 litres of water spread across the night, UAE doctors advised. Cut back on salty food at Suhoor, sweet drinks and too much caffeine.1
Dehydration matters more on these medicines. Vomiting or diarrhoea can dry you out, and the EU Mounjaro label says that can harm the kidneys.5
The Ramadan guidelines also say to avoid hard exercise in the last hours of the fast, before sunset.2
Four checks for people already on Mounjaro, Ozempic or Wegovy in the UAE, including Ramadan planning.
What about the three days of Eid?
Eat as you did during Ramadan: small plates, slowly. The Ramadan guidelines warn that Eid ul-Fitr, a 3-day festival, brings a risk of overindulgence.2
- Daytime meals return. After a month of two meals, several rich meals a day can upset a stomach that empties slowly.1,5
- Small treats, not none. The US advisory suggests “portion-controlled treats” and regular small meals, and avoiding large meals.3
- Sweets. The Ramadan guidelines advise avoiding sugary desserts. They warn that the “fasting and feasting” of the month encourages large, carbohydrate-heavy meals and sugary treats.2
- See your doctor after. They advise a follow-up after Ramadan to review medicines and how fasting went.2
The same applies to weddings and family gatherings through the year. Our guide Life on a GLP‑1 covers Ramadan, Eid and weddings together.
When is a symptom more than a full stomach?
When vomiting won’t stop, stomach pain is severe, or you show signs of dehydration. UAE doctors said each of these needs a medical review.1
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are very common (more than 1 in 10) on the EU Mounjaro and Wegovy labels, mostly while the dose rises.5,9
- Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea can harm the kidneys.5
- Low blood sugar is more likely if you also take insulin or a sulphonylurea, and fasting adds to that risk.5,1
- Pancreatitis is uncommon (1 in 100 to 1 in 1,000) on the EU Mounjaro label. The sign is severe stomach pain that won’t go away.5
The doctors also warned against combining injections with slimming teas, detox products or appetite pills, some of which contain hidden medicines.1

How we researched this
On 12 Oct 2026 we read a Gulf News report quoting three UAE doctors on GLP‑1s in Ramadan (Feb 2026), the full International Diabetes Federation and DAR Ramadan guidelines (2021), and the EU labels. The US nutrition advisory was already checked for our other GLP Guidebook pages.
The Ramadan guidelines are written for people with diabetes; we say so where we use them. We found no UAE government guidance on eating with GLP‑1 medicines in Ramadan, and no study of Eid eating on these medicines.
Before you move on
- Iftar: water, a date or two, then a small plate, slowly.
- Don't skip Suhoor, even without hunger.
- Protein first; 2 to 3 litres of water through the night.
- Eid: small plates and a check-up after Ramadan.
