Can a UAE telehealth doctor prescribe Mounjaro or Wegovy online?
What Dubai’s obesity telehealth guideline and Abu Dhabi’s tele-medicine standard require, what a proper online consultation includes, and the red flags.
Written for the United Arab Emirates. Reading from India? India version
Yes, if the doctor and the service are licensed by a UAE health regulator. Dubai’s obesity telehealth guideline covers DHA-licensed doctors working by phone or video. In Abu Dhabi, the doctor must hold a live audio or video call with you before prescribing, and record the prescription in your medical file.
Key takeaways
- Dubai’s obesity telehealth guideline applies to DHA-licensed doctors and facilities, and excludes only emergencies and narcotic or controlled medicines.1
- Abu Dhabi’s tele-medicine standard says the doctor “must have real-time audio/video communication with the patient before issuing the prescription”.2
- Abu Dhabi’s standard also requires the prescription to be captured in your electronic medical record and a face-to-face visit when the doctor is uncertain.2
- Khaleej Times reported in September 2025 that more than 1,600 people had recently signed up for GLP‑1 treatment through virtual healthcare platforms.3
- Dubai’s guideline describes medicine at a BMI over 30, or 27 to 29.9 with health problems, after a lifestyle programme fails to give 5% loss.1

Is online prescribing allowed in the UAE?
Yes, through licensed services. A 2019 federal Cabinet resolution governs tele-health, and Dubai and Abu Dhabi each set their own rules for doctors working remotely.1,2
- GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in the UAE and should be used under medical supervision.4
- This post explains regulators’ rules. We don’t name, rank or link to apps, clinics or pharmacies.
- Every risk of these medicines is in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.
Dubai’s guideline excludes prescribing narcotic, controlled or semi-controlled medicines by telehealth.1 We found nothing classing GLP‑1s as controlled medicines; Abu Dhabi’s health department describes them as prescription-only.4 So the question is not whether online prescribing is allowed, but whether the service follows the rules below.
What do Dubai’s rules require?
A DHA-licensed doctor working for a DHA-licensed facility. The obesity telehealth guideline defines a virtual assessment as a “telephone or video call” consultation.1
- A full history. Diet, activity, family history, related health problems, and screening for depression and eating disorders.1
- Measurements. The doctor might ask you to measure your waist, hips and neck at home.1
- A look on video. The guideline lists skin and joint signs the doctor might check through a video call.1
- Red flags. Serious findings should be referred to an emergency department, a family doctor or a specialist, face to face.1
The criteria for medicine are the same online as in a clinic: a BMI over 30, or 27 to 29.9 with health problems, after a lifestyle programme without at least 5% weight loss in 3 to 6 months.1
What does Abu Dhabi require?
A live audio or video call before any prescription, from a DoH-licensed facility, recorded in your medical file. A questionnaire alone is not enough.2
| Abu Dhabi tele-prescribing rule | Section |
|---|---|
| Provider registers you and verifies your identity first | 12.3.2 |
| Doctor prescribes live, from the licensed facility’s system | 12.3.4 |
| Real-time audio or video call before the prescription | 12.3.5 |
| Call and prescription recorded in your electronic medical record | 12.3.6 |
| Unsure of the right treatment? Face-to-face visit first | 12.4.1.1 |
| Conditions needing a physical examination are excluded | 12.2.2 |
DoH Standard on Tele-Medicine, 2020, section 12.2
The standard also leaves it to the doctor to decide whether a previous face-to-face meeting is needed before prescribing remotely.2 For obesity medicines, Abu Dhabi adds its own rules: an obesity-certified doctor, and a BMI of 30 with a weight-related condition, or over 40.5 Our post on getting a prescription legally compares the emirates.

What does a proper online consultation include?
Much the same as a clinic visit: identity and consent, a full history, measurements, a discussion of risks, and a plan for follow-up. These come straight from the Dubai and Abu Dhabi rules.1,2,5
- Who you are. Your identity checked and your consent recorded.2
- Your history. Health, medicines, diet, activity, mood and eating habits.1
- Your numbers. Weight, height, waist and, often, blood tests. UAE doctors described blood sugar, cholesterol, and liver, kidney and thyroid tests before starting a GLP‑1 tablet.6
- The discussion. How the medicine works, its side effects and the monitoring needed.5
- Follow-up. Abu Dhabi’s standard says to continue beyond 6 months only after at least 5% weight loss, which means someone has to check.5
Guide 7: Choosing a provider turns this into questions to ask before you pay.
Why are so many online services offering GLP-1s?
Demand is high and the UAE’s telehealth system is well developed. Novo Nordisk said the strength of a country’s telehealth infrastructure guided where it launched the Wegovy pill first.7
Khaleej Times reported more than 1,600 people signing up for GLP‑1 treatment through virtual platforms in 2025.3 After the Wegovy pill launched, one digital health provider said it was dispensing a prescription about every 17 minutes.8
Name the incentive. The medicine costs the same fixed price everywhere, so services compete on convenience, coaching and monthly fees.9 Speed is part of what they sell; it is not the same as a careful assessment.
What are the red flags?
No real doctor contact, no licence you can check, or a seller rather than a prescriber. UAE regulators have acted against online sellers and influencers.10,11
- A prescription after a form alone, with no call, in Abu Dhabi.2
- No licensing authority named for the doctor or the service.
- Medicine offered through social media messages, or delivered without a prescription.11,12
- Vials, powders or “peptides” instead of registered pens or tablets.4,10
- Promises such as “100% natural and completely safe”, a pitch the Emirates Drug Establishment has warned about.10
Our posts on fake pens and peptides cover the unregistered products.

Not in Abu Dhabi: the doctor must have real-time audio or video contact before prescribing.2 Dubai’s guideline describes phone or video consultations.1

How we researched this
On 12 October 2026 we read Dubai’s Clinical Guidelines for Virtual Management of Obesity (2024), Abu Dhabi’s Standard on Tele-Medicine (2020) and obesity standard (2025), DoH circulars on fake products, and news reports on online GLP‑1 services.
We could not open Dubai’s general telehealth standard or an official online-pharmacy standard, so we don’t describe them. We found no GLP‑1 telehealth rule for the Northern Emirates. We don’t name any app, clinic or pharmacy.
Before you move on
- Online prescribing is legal through licensed UAE services.
- Abu Dhabi needs a live audio or video call before any prescription.
- A proper consultation checks your history, numbers and risks, and plans follow-up.
- A form-only prescription, social media sales or “peptides” are red flags.
