The short answer

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily semaglutide tablet for weight, approved by the UAE’s drug regulator on 1 June 2026. The dose starts at 1.5 mg and rises monthly to 25 mg. It must be taken on an empty stomach with a sip of water, then 30 minutes without food. A month costs AED 779 to AED 1,610.

Key takeaways

  • The UAE’s drug regulator, the Emirates Drug Establishment, approved the Wegovy pill for long-term weight management on 1 June 2026.1
  • The Wegovy pill starts at 1.5 mg a day and rises to 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg, with at least a month at each step, on the UK label.2
  • The UK label says to take the Wegovy pill after at least 8 hours without food, with up to half a glass of water, then wait 30 minutes.2
  • In the OASIS 4 trial, people on the 25 mg pill lost 13.6% of their weight over 64 weeks, against 2.2% on dummy pills, but 47 in 100 felt sick.2
  • At fixed UAE prices, 30 Wegovy pills cost AED 779 at 1.5 or 4 mg, AED 1,199 at 9 mg and AED 1,610 at 25 mg.3

What is the Wegovy pill?

It is semaglutide, the same medicine as the Wegovy and Ozempic injections, made as a daily tablet for weight. The UAE approved it on 1 June 2026, the second country after the US.1

Before you go further
  • GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in the UAE. A pharmacy needs a prescription from a UAE-licensed doctor.3,4
  • The UAE label is not published online. Label facts here come from the UK label for Wegovy tablets, which we say each time.
  • We name brands only to say what is approved and at what fixed price. We don’t recommend one, and we don’t name sellers.
  • Every risk of these medicines is in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.

Medicine and brand. The medicine is what works in your body; the brand is the name on the box. Semaglutide is the medicine. Its brands in the UAE are Wegovy (pens and pills, for weight), Ozempic (pens, for type 2 diabetes) and Rybelsus (tablets, for type 2 diabetes).1,5 All three are made by Novo Nordisk.

How it works. Semaglutide copies GLP‑1, a gut hormone released after eating. It slows how fast the stomach empties and reduces appetite, and it helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high.2

Novo Nordisk launched the pill in the UAE on 3 June 2026, the first country outside the US to have it.6 It is also approved here to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight.6

Who is the Wegovy pill approved for?

Adults with obesity, or adults who are overweight with a weight-related health problem. On the UK label, that means a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight-related condition.1,2

  • Abu Dhabi is stricter. Its obesity standard starts GLP‑1s at a BMI of 30 with a weight-related condition, or over 40.7
  • Not for cosmetic weight loss. A UAE doctor told Khaleej Times: “If your BMI is in the normal range and the goal is aesthetic, the answer is no.”8
  • Not for children. The UK label says safety and benefit below 18 have not been established.2

These are starting points for a conversation, and a doctor decides. Guide 4 covers who should not take GLP‑1s, and Guide 1 explains BMI.

What are the doses, and what do they cost?

Four strengths, taken one step at a time: 1.5 mg, then 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg, with at least a month on each. 25 mg is the maintenance dose on the UK label.2

Daily dose30 tablets, fixed price
1.5 mgStarting dose, at least 1 monthAED 779
4 mgAt least 1 monthAED 779
9 mgAt least 1 monthAED 1,199
25 mgMaintenance doseAED 1,610

Dose steps from the UK label. Price to the public on Abu Dhabi’s official drug list, effective 2 Oct 2026, checked 12 Oct 2026.2,3

Khaleej Times reported the same prices in June 2026.9 The UK label says to take only one tablet a day: never two tablets to make a higher dose.2 The doctor can keep you on a lower step if needed.2 Our price post lists every GLP‑1, and our insurance post explains why most people pay themselves.

How do you take the Wegovy pill?

On an empty stomach, after at least 8 hours without food, with a sip of water. Then nothing to eat, drink or swallow for 30 minutes, the UK label says.2

  1. Take it after at least 8 hours without food, usually on waking.2
  2. Swallow it whole with a sip of water, up to half a glass (120 ml). Don’t split, crush or chew it.2
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets. Waiting less lowers how much is absorbed.2
  4. Missed a dose? The UK label says skip it and take the next one the following day.2

Storage in UAE heat. The UK label says the tablets need no special temperature, but keep them in the original blister pack, away from moisture and light.2 Weekly pens are different: they must stay below 30°C or in a fridge once in use.10

In Ramadan, the 8-hour and 30-minute rules have to fit inside the night. Our Ramadan post explains how.

How much weight did people lose in the trial?

In OASIS 4, people on the 25 mg pill lost 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks on average. People on dummy pills lost 2.2%.2

How a trial like this works:

  • People are split into groups at random.
  • One group gets the medicine; the other gets a dummy pill that looks the same.
  • Both groups get the same diet and activity advice.
  • The gap between the groups is what the medicine added.
OASIS 4Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) 25 mg daily

307 adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, all with diet and activity advice. 64 weeks. From the UK label.

Wegovy pill 25 mg−13.6%
Dummy pill−2.2%

Average weight lost, as % of body weight. For a 100 kg (220 lb) person, about 14 kg (31 lb) against 2 kg (5 lb).

OASIS 4, Table 2 of the UK label: 205 people on the pill, 102 on dummy pills.2

76 in 100 people on the pill lost at least 5% of their weight, against 31 in 100 on dummy pills.2 Put the other way, about 24 in 100 on the pill did not reach 5%. These are averages: some people lose much more, and some very little.

How is the pill different from the Wegovy injection?

Same medicine, different routine: a tablet every morning with strict timing, instead of a weekly injection. The trial results were in a similar range, but they came from separate trials.2,11

  • Routine. The pill is daily, with the 8-hour and 30-minute rules. The injection is once a week on any day, with or without food.2,10
  • Results. In STEP 1, the Wegovy 2.4 mg injection gave 14.9% average weight loss over 68 weeks, against 2.4% on dummy injections.11 Separate trials can’t be compared directly: the people, lengths and methods differ.
  • Switching. The UK label says people on the 2.4 mg weekly injection can move to the 25 mg tablet, starting a week after the last injection. It warns the effect of switching “cannot easily be predicted”.2
  • Storage. No fridge needed for the tablets, which matters in a UAE summer.2

Foundayo is another daily weight-loss tablet in the UAE, with no food rules. Our Foundayo post covers it.

What are the side effects?

Mostly stomach effects, worst while the dose is going up. In OASIS 4, 47 in 100 people on the pill felt sick, against 19 in 100 on dummy pills.2

  • Vomiting: 31 in 100 on the pill, against 6 in 100 on dummy pills.2
  • Diarrhoea: 18 in 100, against 9 in 100.2
  • Constipation: 20 in 100, against 10 in 100. It tended to last longer.2

Most of these were mild to moderate and short-lived, the label says.2 Indigestion was more frequent with the tablets than in the injection trials.2 Pregnancy: the UK label says not to use it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and to stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.2

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are very common, more than 1 in 10 people, and can cause dehydration that harms the kidneys.2,10
  • Pancreatitis is uncommon (1 in 100 to 1 in 1,000) on the EU Wegovy injection label. The sign is severe stomach pain that won’t go away.10
  • Gallstones are common (1 in 10 to 1 in 100) on the EU Wegovy injection label.10
  • Low blood sugar is more likely with insulin or a sulfonylurea, the UK tablet label warns.2

Questions people ask

Is the Wegovy pill available in the UAE?

Yes. The Emirates Drug Establishment approved it on 1 June 2026, and it launched on 3 June 2026.1,6 It needs a prescription.

How much is the Wegovy pill in the UAE?

AED 779 for 30 tablets of 1.5 mg or 4 mg, AED 1,199 for 9 mg and AED 1,610 for 25 mg, at fixed prices.3

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

Both are semaglutide tablets. Rybelsus is registered for type 2 diabetes in doses up to 14 mg; the Wegovy pill is for weight, up to 25 mg.2,5

Can I switch from Wegovy injections to the pill?

The UK label says people on the 2.4 mg injection can move to the 25 mg tablet a week after the last injection. Your doctor decides.2

Does the Wegovy pill need a fridge?

No. The UK label says it needs no special temperature; keep it in its blister pack, away from moisture and light.2

How we researched this

On 12 October 2026 we read the UK label (SmPC) for Wegovy tablets, the UAE approval and launch reports, Daman’s GLP‑1 table and Abu Dhabi’s obesity standard, and checked the price of each strength on Abu Dhabi’s official drug list (effective 2 October 2026). Injection comparisons use the STEP 1 paper and the EU Wegovy label.

The UAE label is not published online, so we used the UK label and said so. We left out the maker’s higher “when adhered to” weight-loss figure, because it is not the trial’s main result, and we left out clinic and programme fees.

Before you move on

  • The Wegovy pill is semaglutide, the same medicine as the Wegovy injection.
  • Doses step up monthly from 1.5 mg to 25 mg, one tablet a day.
  • Empty stomach, a sip of water, then 30 minutes without food or drink.
  • Stomach side effects are common, especially while the dose rises.
