Could a GLP-1 medicine be an option for me?

GLP-1 check: what the labels and each emirate's rules say. 9 short questions, checked against the labels, Abu Dhabi's obesity standard, Dubai's obesity guideline and what insurance covers.

Takes about 1 minute Nothing you type leaves your device Every result cites its source

It never says "yes" or "you qualify". It shows what published rules say about answers like yours. A doctor licensed in the UAE decides.

Question 1 of 9
What brings you here?

Pick the one that fits best.

How this works

The check compares your answers with three sets of published rules:

  • The drug labels: who should not take these medicines, and the BMI the weight approvals start from. The UAE's label texts aren't published online, so we use the European and US labels for the same medicines and say so; the UAE approvals for weight use the same BMI numbers.1,2,3,4
  • The rule in your emirate: Abu Dhabi's 2025 standard for treating obesity without surgery, Dubai's obesity guideline, and the federal Ministry's guideline for the Northern Emirates.5,6,7
  • What insurance usually covers: Dubai's basic plan, Daman's GLP-1 policy and the Thiqa obesity programme in Abu Dhabi.8,9,10

Safety answers are checked first, so a "do not use" answer always wins over a BMI number. BMI is rounded to one decimal place before any rule is applied, so the number you see is the number we use. UAE rules use the standard WHO BMI numbers (overweight from 25, obesity from 30) for everyone.26,5

The five results, and the rule behind each. Safety answers are checked first, from the top.

Usually not used for you

If your answers show any of these:

  • Medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, in you or a close relative
  • Pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to get pregnant
  • Severe gastroparesis (food stays in the stomach far too long)
  • A past serious allergic reaction to these medicines

Rule and source: a contraindication (a reason not to use the medicine) or "not recommended" on the labels1,2,14,15

Talk to a specialist first

If your answers show any of these:

  • Under 18
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • An eating disorder
  • Past pancreatitis (a swollen, painful pancreas)
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Diabetic eye disease

Rule and source: teen use from age 12 on the Wegovy label1; not for type 1 diabetes14,21; eating-disorder concern19; pancreatitis, kidney and eye warnings1,14. BMI rules are still checked, and shown when they matter.

Talk to your doctor about it

If your answers show any of these:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • A BMI of 30 or more
  • A BMI of 27 to 29.9 with a weight-related condition

Rule and source: the weight labels for Wegovy, Mounjaro and Foundayo1,2,4; the diabetes labels21. The result then shows the rule in your emirate, which can be stricter, and what insurance usually covers.

Usually not the first step

If your answers show any of these:

  • A BMI of 25 or more (overweight), below the label line
  • This includes people who want to lose a few kilos, or lose weight before an event

Rule and source: below the label line1,2; WHO BMI numbers as UAE regulators use them26

Below the range where they're used

If your answers show any of these:

  • A BMI below 25

Rule and source: WHO BMI numbers as UAE regulators use them26; the weight labels cover obesity, or overweight with a condition1,2

Some answers add notes for your doctor, whatever the result. These cover:

  • already taking another GLP-1, or a gliptin (a DPP-4 inhibitor tablet such as sitagliptin)
  • gallstones or gallbladder problems
  • insulin and sulfonylureas (diabetes tablets such as gliclazide)
  • the contraceptive pill
  • planned surgery
  • heart disease and fatty liver
  • age 75 and over
  • not knowing your sugar levels
  • an Asian background below the label line
  • fasting in Ramadan

What this can't tell you

  • Whether a medicine is right for you. Only a doctor who has checked you can weigh your whole health and the side effects.
  • Whether your insurer will pay. We explain how the main plans usually work. Your policy has the final word, and enhanced plans differ.9,11
  • Which medicine, or what dose. We don't compare brands.
  • Everything on the labels. We ask about the most important answers. A doctor reviews the full list. See Guide 4.

These medicines are prescription-only in the UAE.12 In Abu Dhabi, an online doctor must see you on a live audio or video call before prescribing.13 The Emirates Drug Establishment has acted against online sellers of unapproved weight-loss products, including "peptides".24

Questions people ask

Does this check tell me if I qualify for Mounjaro or Wegovy?

No. There's no "qualify" here. It shows what the labels, Abu Dhabi's obesity standard, Dubai's obesity guideline and UAE insurance rules say about people with answers like yours. A licensed doctor decides, after weighing your whole health and the side effects.

What BMI do I need for weight-loss injections in the UAE?

The labels start at a BMI of 30, or 27 with a weight-related condition.1,2 Abu Dhabi is stricter: its 2025 standard starts GLP-1 medicines at a BMI of 30 or more with at least one weight-related condition, or over 40, and a doctor certified in obesity management by the Department of Health decides.5 Dubai's guideline follows the label numbers, after a lifestyle programme has been tried.6

Does insurance cover weight-loss injections in the UAE?

Rarely. Dubai's basic Essential Benefits Plan excludes medicines for weight reduction.10 In Abu Dhabi, Daman covers GLP-1 medicines for obesity only for Thiqa members enrolled in the Thiqa obesity programme.9,8 Cover for type 2 diabetes is more common, with conditions.9,11

Does my ethnic background change anything?

UAE rules use the standard WHO BMI numbers for everyone.26 Abu Dhabi's standard notes that people of Asian origin start to carry weight-related risk at a BMI over 23, and Dubai's guideline uses lower waist cut-offs for Asian adults, so it's worth raising with your doctor.5,6

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser. Your answers aren't sent, stored or put in the web address. They disappear when you close the page.
