When should I call 000 on a GLP‑1?

The short answer

On Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy or Ozempic (semaglutide), call triple zero (000) for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as a swollen tongue or trouble breathing, or for collapse. Severe stomach pain that spreads to your back, or sudden loss of vision, needs the emergency department. Healthdirect's nurse line is 1800 022 222.

Which symptoms need 000 or the emergency department?

Severe pain in the stomach and back, a severe allergic reaction and loss of vision are among the serious side effects that need urgent help, Ozempic's Australian leaflet says.1

Get help now: call 000 if you are on a GLP‑1 and have:
  • a swollen tongue, swelling or tightness in your throat, difficult or noisy breathing, or persistent dizziness or collapse1,2
  • symptoms that could be a heart attack: severe pancreatitis pain can feel like one3
Go to the nearest emergency department for:
  • sudden, severe pain in the upper belly that may spread to your back, chest or sides, often with nausea and vomiting1,3
  • sudden loss of vision, or eyesight that is quickly getting worse1
  • a blocked bowel: severe constipation with stomach ache, bloating or vomiting1
If it feels critical or life-threatening, call 000 for an ambulance.4

When is it urgent, but not 000?

Some problems need a doctor the same day, or the emergency department if you can't get one.5,6

  • gallbladder pain with a fever, pain that simple pain relief doesn't settle, or pain that lasts a few hours or stops you eating and drinking normally5
  • signs of severe dehydration, such as extreme thirst, fast breathing or heart rate, confusion, or cold hands and feet6
  • injecting too much: phone the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or go to the emergency department, even if you feel fine1

Who can you call if you're not sure?

Healthdirect's free helpline, 1800 022 222, has registered nurses on it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.4

In Victoria the service is called NURSE-ON-CALL. Calls may cost more from a mobile.4 Once you're safe, you can report the side effect: see How do I report a side effect to the TGA? Everyday stomach effects are in Guide 5.
