How do you dispose of used GLP-1 pens and needles in Australia?
Which parts count as sharps for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic, what container to use, and the state-by-state rules on where it goes.
Written for Australia. Other country versions are coming.
Used pen needles, and single-dose pens with a built-in needle, are sharps. Put them straight into a sharps container or a puncture-proof screw-top bottle. Where the full container goes depends on where you live: the ACT says never the household bin, while some Queensland and WA rules allow it sealed.
Key takeaways
- Diabetes Australia says used sharps, including pen needles, go in an Australian Standard sharps container or a puncture-resistant plastic container with a screw top.1
- Mounjaro KwikPen packs include no needles, while Wegovy FlexTouch packs include a needle for each dose; each label says to discard needles after each injection.2,3
- The ACT Government says used sharps must not go in household bins, even if sealed in a sharps container.9
- A Queensland council allows up to 7 litres of sharps, sealed in a rigid plastic container, in the normal garbage bin.7
- Free NDSS pen needles are for registrants who use insulin; the NDSS page does not mention GLP-1 medicines.11

Which parts of a GLP-1 pen count as sharps?
Anything with a needle. For multi-dose pens that means each used needle; for single-dose pens it means the whole pen.1,3
Diabetes Australia defines sharps as devices that pierce the skin, used at home or outside hospitals. That includes pen needles, syringes and lancets.1
- Mounjaro KwikPen (multi-dose): no needles come in the pack, so you use separate pen needles.2 Each used needle is a sharp.
- Mounjaro single-dose pen: the needle is built in, so the whole used pen is a sharp.2
- Wegovy FlexTouch (four doses): needles come in the pack. The label says to attach a new needle each time, remove it after the injection, and store the pen without a needle.3
- Wegovy single-dose pen: discard the whole pen after each injection, the label says.3
- Ozempic: discard the needle after each injection.4
The labels say to dispose of these "in accordance with local requirements".3,4 The local requirements are the state and council rules below.
What container should you use for used needles?
An Australian Standard sharps container, or a puncture-resistant plastic container with a screw-top lid.1
- At home: NSW Health says an empty laundry detergent bottle with a screw top will do.5
- Not these: soft drink bottles, glass containers and aluminium cans, which aren't puncture-resistant or shatterproof.1 A Queensland council adds plastic milk containers to that list.7
- Straight in: put each used needle in the container straight after use.1
- When it's full: close it securely. Kingborough Council in Tasmania won't take containers that are overfilled or not closed securely.10
Sharps containers are sold in pharmacies and medical supply shops, from 250 mL to 10 L.1 Some councils give them out free; Boroondara in Victoria is one example.6
Where do full sharps containers go in each state?
It depends on where you live. Some states and councils allow a sealed rigid container in the household bin; others, like the ACT, never do.7,8,9
Diabetes Australia, a national charity, takes the strict line: sharps "cannot – and should not" go in household general waste.1 If you aren't sure, a pharmacy, hospital or council drop-off point is the safe choice everywhere.1
| State or territory | Household bin? | Where full containers go |
|---|---|---|
| New South Wales | Not listed as an option | Hospitals, some pharmacies and medical centres, community health centres, council sharps bins.5 |
| Victoria | No, in the council we checked | Some councils, such as Boroondara, give out containers and take them back full. Helpline 1800 552 355.6 |
| Queensland | Yes, in the council we checked, if sealed in a rigid container (up to 7 litres) | Or a participating pharmacy, many hospitals, or a waste facility with a sharps area.7 |
| Western Australia | Only if other options aren't available, in a rigid screw-top container | Needle and syringe programs, or disposal units provided by some councils and businesses.8 |
| South Australia | Not stated | Diabetes Australia says to contact your local council.1 |
| Tasmania | No, in the council we checked | Designated locations, in an approved container; contact your council.1,10 |
| ACT | No, even sealed | Recycling drop-off centres, two health centres, and public toilet sharps bins for single sharps.9 |
| Northern Territory | Not stated | Some public hospitals and pharmacies; contact your council, Diabetes Australia says.1 |
Checked 12 Oct 2026. Rules are set by state health departments and local councils, and can differ between councils in the same state.
Ring first. Diabetes Australia suggests contacting a pharmacy or other drop-off point before you bring a container, to check it accepts them.1
Four checks: whether your script came the right way, whether your pen is genuine, side effects to watch, and when to review.
Where should used needles never go?
Never loose in any bin, never in recycling, and never down the toilet or a drain.1,8,9
The ACT Government calls syringes hazardous waste, and says safe disposal protects workers in health facilities and waste management, and the community.9
What about leftover medicine and old pens?
Take unused medicine back to a pharmacy. The Mounjaro label says unused medicine or waste "should be disposed of by taking to your local pharmacy".2
- A finished multi-dose pen. The Wegovy label says to discard the pen after the last dose, as local rules require.3
- Unknown or compounded products. The TGA advises taking any remaining vials of compounded semaglutide of unknown origin to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.12 Our post on the compounding ban explains why.
What if you find a used needle in public?
Report it. Each state and territory has a hotline or council contact for discarded needles.5,6,7,9
Questions people ask
Can I put used needles in the bin in Australia?
It depends on your state and council. The ACT says never, even sealed. Some Queensland and WA rules allow a sealed rigid container in the household bin.7,8,9
Where can I get a free sharps container?
Some councils give them out, such as Boroondara in Victoria. Pharmacies and medical supply shops also sell them.1,6
Does the NDSS give free needles for Mounjaro or Ozempic?
The NDSS gives free pen needles to registrants who use insulin. Its page does not mention GLP‑1 medicines.11
Do Mounjaro KwikPens come with needles?
No. The Australian label says no needles are included in the KwikPen pack.2
Can pharmacies take used sharps?
Many can. NSW lists some pharmacies, and Queensland's needle program pharmacies accept up to 7 litres. Call first to check.1,5,7
How we researched this
On 12 Oct 2026 we read the Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic Australian PIs, Diabetes Australia's sharps page, NSW Health, HealthyWA, ACT City Services and the NDSS. For Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania we found no single state health page, so we used one council page each, and say so in the table.
For South Australia and the Northern Territory we rely on Diabetes Australia's summary. Council rules change; check yours. This page names no businesses.
Before you move on
- Used pen needles and single-dose pens are sharps.
- Use an approved sharps container or a screw-top puncture-proof bottle.
- Whether the household bin is allowed depends on your state and council.
- Never recycling, toilets or drains.
