- Canadian law bans advertising a drug to the public as a treatment for obesity or diabetes. This page is information, not an ad, and nothing here is for sale. The risks are in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.

These are the maker's list prices, not an official formulary price, because no public plan lists tirzepatide.3 A Mounjaro KwikPen holds 4 weekly doses.4 The monograph starts at 2.5 mg for 4 weeks, then 5 mg, rising by 2.5 mg at a time after at least 4 weeks if needed, up to 15 mg.4 So a year on 2.5 mg then 5 mg is 13 four-week supplies at $300, or $3,900, by our arithmetic. Your prescriber decides your dose; this is only an example for the sum.
Does any public plan cover Mounjaro?
Not as of 12 October 2026: tirzepatide isn't on Ontario's formulary or the RAMQ list, and BC was still considering it.3,5,6
BC PharmaCare asked for public input on Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes from 25 February to 24 March 2026, which is a step in its review, not a decision.6 In Quebec, Diabète Québec's March 2026 table lists Mounjaro under private insurance only.5 Some private plans cover it; ask your insurer.
Is Mounjaro the right brand for weight loss?
In Canada, Mounjaro is approved only for type 2 diabetes; Zepbound is Lilly's tirzepatide brand for weight management.4,7
Using Mounjaro for weight is off-label, which a prescriber may choose to do. See Is Mounjaro approved for weight loss in Canada? Prescription costs can count toward the Medical Expense Tax Credit; see Are GLP‑1s tax deductible in Canada? The full price picture is in Guide 6.
- Stomach effects are very common. In the weight trials on the Canadian Zepbound monograph, 25 to 29 in 100 people on 5 to 15 mg felt sick (nausea), against 9 in 100 on placebo.7
- Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) was reported in 0.6 in 100 people on Zepbound and 0.2 in 100 on placebo.7
- The pill. Tirzepatide can make the contraceptive pill less reliable. The monograph advises switching to another method, or adding a barrier method, for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase.7
- Who shouldn't take it. Not for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2. Mounjaro's monograph says not to use it in pregnancy.7,4
