Can you stop Ozempic or Mounjaro suddenly?

The short answer

No US or EU label for Ozempic (semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide) gives a taper or lists a withdrawal syndrome, but EU leaflets say to talk to your doctor first. Blood sugar can rise in diabetes. In a Wegovy 2.4 mg trial, people who stopped the drug and its diet-and-exercise programme regained on average two-thirds of lost weight within a year.

Before you go further
  • GLP‑1 medicines such as Ozempic and Mounjaro are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.8
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.8 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.9,10
  • We found no public Indian label for Ozempic or Mounjaro, so this page quotes the US and EU labels. It reports what they say; it is not a plan for stopping.
  • The risks are in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.

Is there an Ozempic or Mounjaro withdrawal, or a taper?

No US or EU label we read for Ozempic or Mounjaro lists a withdrawal syndrome or a schedule for lowering the dose to stop.1,2,4,5

A 2025 review of 18 trials notes "current guidelines provide no specific recommendations regarding dose tapering".7

Ozempic's EU leaflet says "Do not stop using this medicine without talking to your doctor." Mounjaro's says "Do not stop using Mounjaro without talking with your doctor."4,5 The US labels say to stop for a suspected swollen pancreas (pancreatitis) or serious allergic reactions.1,2

In the STEP 1 extension, people without diabetes who stopped Wegovy 2.4 mg, a higher semaglutide dose than Ozempic, and the trial's diet-and-exercise programme regained on average two-thirds of lost weight within a year. That average is for the 228 on semaglutide; the 327 included placebo users.11 More: What happens when you stop Ozempic or Mounjaro?

What happens to blood sugar if you have diabetes?

The EU leaflets warn that blood sugar can rise after stopping, and a 2025 review found HbA1c went up 0.65 points in type 2 diabetes.4,5,7

The Ozempic leaflet says "your blood sugar levels may increase." The Mounjaro leaflet says this applies "if you have type 2 diabetes".4,5 The review's 0.65 figure came from only 4 small trials of 219 people, with widely varying results.7 Those trials used older medicines (liraglutide and exenatide), not Ozempic or Mounjaro.7

At that average, an HbA1c of 7.0% would become about 7.7%. What those numbers mean is in What is a normal HbA1c? The type 2 diabetes path covers the other diabetes medicines.

Does the medicine leave your body straight away?

The US Ozempic label says semaglutide stays in the blood for about 5 weeks after the last dose, because its half-life is about 1 week.1

Half-life is the time for half the medicine to leave the body. After a 2.4 mg Wegovy dose, the EU label says about 7 weeks.6 Tirzepatide, in Mounjaro, has a half-life of about 5 days.2 Because of it, the EU Mounjaro label says to stop at least 1 month before a planned pregnancy.5

Get help now: call 112 for severe stomach pain that won't go away, with or without vomiting, sometimes felt through to your back. The US labels list this as a sign of pancreatitis.1,2 Call too for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing.1

What do the labels say about restarting after a break?

The US labels allow a late dose within 5 days for Ozempic and 4 days for Mounjaro; after that, they say to skip it.1,2

Neither the Ozempic nor the Mounjaro label, US or EU, says how to restart after a longer break.1,2,4,5 The Wegovy labels do. After 2 or more missed doses in a row, the US label says to restart the dose steps lower "to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions".3 The EU label says that if more doses are missed, "reducing the starting dose for re-initiation should be considered".6 Wegovy is semaglutide sold for weight.3

No label we read names a restart dose. Each brand's rules are in What if you miss a dose?

Breaks are not always planned. In July 2026 Dr Reddy's delayed its generic semaglutide supplies after some batches were found out of specification, and Torrent recalled some Semalix pens.12,13 More on the recalls: Which semaglutide batches were recalled in India in 2026?
