Is semaglutide the same as Ozempic?

The short answer

No. Semaglutide is the active ingredient, and Ozempic is one brand that contains it. In India, Ozempic is Novo Nordisk's weekly injection for type 2 diabetes, in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg strengths. Wegovy, Rybelsus, Poviztra and generics launched since March 2026 also contain semaglutide, with different doses, forms and approved uses.

Before you go further
  • GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.12
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.12 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.13,14
  • The risks are in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.
  • Nothing here recommends a brand or promises any result.

What is the difference between semaglutide and Ozempic?

Semaglutide is the medicine's own name (the molecule), and Ozempic is the brand name Novo Nordisk sells one semaglutide product under.

The US label calls it "Ozempic (semaglutide) injection".1 Semaglutide copies a gut hormone called GLP‑1. It makes the body release insulin when sugar is high. It also cuts how much you eat by acting on appetite.2 How that works is in Guide 2: What GLP‑1 medicines do.

In India, Ozempic is a once-weekly injection.4 It launched on 12 Dec 2025 for type 2 diabetes, in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg strengths.4,5

Which medicines in India contain semaglutide?

At least 4 brands from Novo Nordisk contain semaglutide in India, plus generics from Indian companies since Novo's patent expired on 20 Mar 2026.5,6,8,9

Generics contain the same molecule as Ozempic. Their devices and approved uses differ by product, from vials to disposable and reusable pens, some for type 2 diabetes only and some for weight too.5,10 Brands, generics and who may prescribe them are covered in Guide 6: Seeing a doctor, and the medicines. The two weekly brands are compared in Wegovy vs Ozempic.

If they all contain semaglutide, can you swap one for another?

No, not on your own, because forms and doses differ, so the same milligrams can put very different amounts in your body.

By the US labels, your body absorbs about 89% of an injected dose. It absorbs only 0.4% to 1% of a Rybelsus tablet.1,3 So the milligrams on a tablet pack and an injection pen can't be compared directly.1,3 The US Rybelsus label lets people on Ozempic 0.5 mg switch to Rybelsus 7 or 14 mg a day, starting one week after the last injection.3

The ceilings differ too. The US label stops Ozempic at 2 mg a week. Wegovy's US label goes to 2.4 mg, and up to 7.2 mg.1,2 The US Wegovy label also says not to use it with any other semaglutide product.2 Two brands at once means taking the same medicine twice.2

Do all semaglutide brands carry the same risks?

Broadly yes, because the risks come from semaglutide itself, and the US Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus labels share one boxed thyroid warning.1,2,3

Generics are made by many different companies.10 In July 2026, Dr Reddy's recalled select batches for an impurity, and Torrent recalled pens Dr Reddy's had made for it. Both said patients were not at risk. USV also recalled batches, by industry reports.11

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are the most common. They include feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and constipation.1
  • Thyroid tumours in rodents. Ruled out by the US label for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2; tell your doctor if this applies.1
  • Swollen pancreas (pancreatitis) has been seen on these medicines.1
  • Gallbladder problems. Gallstones and an inflamed gallbladder have been reported.1
  • Dehydration can harm the kidneys. Vomiting or diarrhoea can dry you out, and sudden kidney injury has been reported.1
  • Pregnancy. Harm to an unborn baby is possible. The US label says to stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.1
