Is there an Ozempic tablet? Rybelsus and oral semaglutide in India
Rybelsus, the Indian generic tablets (Sembolic, Semalix, Obeda), the US “Ozempic pill” and the 25 mg Wegovy pill, with MRPs checked on 5 October 2026.
Written for India. Reading from the US? US versionComing soon
No, not in India. Here, Ozempic is a once-a-week injection. The tablet form of the same medicine, semaglutide, is Rybelsus, plus Indian copies since 2026 (Sembolic, Semalix, Obeda). All are approved for type 2 diabetes only. In the US, Novo has sold a reformulated, lower-dose tablet as Ozempic since May 2026.
Key takeaways
- India has no Ozempic tablet: Ozempic is a weekly injection here, and semaglutide tablets are sold as Rybelsus and, since 2026, Indian generic brands.1,2
- Every semaglutide tablet we found in India, from Rybelsus to Sembolic, Semalix and Obeda, is approved for type 2 diabetes only, not for weight loss.3,4,5
- In the US, Novo has sold a reformulated 1.5, 4 and 9 mg tablet as “Ozempic” since May 2026; India's expert committee asked for an Indian trial before approving it.6,7
- The 25 mg Wegovy pill cut weight by about 14% vs 2% on a dummy pill over 64 weeks, but 74% had stomach side effects vs 42%.8
- Only about 0.4% to 1% of a Rybelsus tablet is absorbed, so it is taken daily at a far higher dose than the weekly injection, on an empty stomach.9

Is there an Ozempic tablet in India?
No. In India, Ozempic is sold only as a once-a-week injection, and the tablet form of the same medicine goes by other names.
Novo Nordisk launched Ozempic in India in December 2025 as a weekly shot.1 Since April 2026, the lowest weekly dose has had an MRP of ₹1,415.10
The medicine inside Ozempic is semaglutide. Novo's tablet of semaglutide is Rybelsus, sold in India since 2022.2 India has approved it in 3, 7 and 14 mg tablets.7 In India, the semaglutide tablets on sale are Rybelsus and the Indian tablets launched in 2026. Our guide on what GLP‑1 medicines do explains how semaglutide works in the body.
In the US, the name now covers a tablet. Since 4 May 2026, Novo has sold a reformulated tablet there under the Ozempic name, in 1.5, 4 and 9 mg.6 More of each dose is absorbed, about 1% to 2% against 0.4% to 1% for Rybelsus.9 Novo says this smaller pill works like the older 3, 7 and 14 mg tablets. It reports the same efficacy and safety.6
The US label, revised January 2026, still covers Rybelsus 3, 7 and 14 mg alongside the new tablets.9 Novo told US Rybelsus users to ask their doctor about moving to the new pill.6 It said Rybelsus will still be sold outside the US.6
How can the same medicine be a weekly shot or a daily tablet?
A helper ingredient lets the tablet be absorbed in the stomach, but so little gets through that the dose is far bigger and daily.
The helper is called SNAC (an absorption enhancer). It lets semaglutide pass into the blood, mainly from the stomach.9 Even so, only about 0.4% to 1% of each Rybelsus tablet reaches the blood.9
The US label lets someone on a 0.5 mg weekly Ozempic shot switch to 7 or 14 mg Rybelsus daily.9 The two brands of tablet don't swap milligram for milligram either.9
Food and drink get in the way, so the routine is strict.9
- One tablet in the morning, on an empty stomach, swallowed whole.9
- With no more than 120 mL (about half a glass) of plain water. No tea, coffee or juice.9
- Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other pills.9
Our Answer on when and how to take Rybelsus will cover the routine in detail.
Your doctor sets the dose. These steps are from the US label. The first month is a starter dose to settle the stomach.9
- Days 1 to 303 mg a day. The label says this dose “is not effective” for blood sugar.9
- Days 31 to 607 mg a day.9
- Day 61 onStay on 7 mg, or go to 14 mg if blood sugar needs more control.9
Our Answer on what Rybelsus 3 mg is used for covers the starter dose.
Which semaglutide tablets are sold in India?
We found 4 tablet brands from 3 companies, all approved for type 2 diabetes: Rybelsus, Sembolic, Semalix and Obeda.
- Semaglutide tablets are prescription-only in India, like every GLP‑1.11
- A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.11 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.24,25 See who may prescribe.
- Risks are real: see Guide 5.
- Check pens and strips against the recall list.
- No tablet promises any result. We list prices in launch order and don't rank them.
Novo's main Indian patent on semaglutide expired on 20 March 2026.10 The next day, Torrent launched Sembolic and Semalix, calling itself the first Indian company with a generic semaglutide tablet.12 Its tablets are approved in 3, 7 and 14 mg for type 2 diabetes.4
Dr Reddy's launched Obeda tablets on 20 May 2026, in the same three strengths.5 India's drug regulator (CDSCO) approved them after a trial in 288 Indians with type 2 diabetes.5 The company said the trial showed them to be no worse than the original tablet.5

Rows in launch order, not by price. A month is 30 tablets, one a day; the monthly figures are our multiplication of per-strip or per-tablet prices. The 3 mg tablet is a 30-day starter dose. Checked 5 October 2026. Each brand also needs a prescription. On Practo, the median listed endocrinologist fee across 6 cities was ₹1,100.15
Three of the names also cover an injection. Torrent sells both Sembolic and Semalix as tablets and as injections.12,17 Obeda is also Dr Reddy's weekly diabetes pen.16 Check the form on the box before you compare anything.
In July 2026, some batches of Obeda and of Semalix 2 mg and 4 mg pens were recalled.17 Torrent said its Semalix and Sembolic tablets were not affected.17 The report we read did not mention Obeda tablets.17
One patent still covers the tablet. Novo holds an Indian patent on a set range of SNAC in the tablet, valid until 2031.18,19 In March 2026, Dr Reddy's told the Delhi High Court it would not sell tablets inside that range.19 The court did not block Torrent's launch.18
When the copies arrived, Novo cut Ozempic and Wegovy prices to fend off cheaper generics.10 Its executives said it was not planning a similar cut for Rybelsus.16 Our post on what changed when the patent expired covers the price war.
Do semaglutide tablets help with weight loss?
Semaglutide tablets lowered weight a little in a diabetes trial, but none sold in India is approved for weight loss.
In a 26-week trial on the US label, people with type 2 diabetes started at about 88 kg.9 Those on 14 mg a day lost 3.7 kg on average; those on a dummy pill lost 1.4 kg.9 Their HbA1c (3-month average blood sugar) fell 1.4 points, against 0.3 on the dummy pill.9
Stomach side effects came with it. In the label's pooled trials, 41% on 14 mg had them, against 21% on a dummy pill.9 Feeling sick (nausea) hit 20% vs 6%, and 8% stopped because of stomach effects, vs 1%.9
In India, Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes,3 and so are the Torrent and Dr Reddy's tablets.4,5 Use for weight alone is off-label (outside the approved use). Rybelsus sales here still more than doubled in a year, to ₹363 crore by April 2024.2 A market researcher told reporters: “The anti-obesity market has itself tripled because of Rybelsus.”2
If you have diabetes, our type 2 diabetes path covers HbA1c and other medicines. If it's about weight, Guide 4 covers when these medicines are not a good idea.
- Stomach effects are common: nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation, mostly while the dose goes up.9
- Pancreatitis (a swollen, painful pancreas) has been seen. Severe stomach pain that may spread to the back is a warning sign.9
- Gallbladder problems, such as gallstones, have been reported.9
- Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea can hurt the kidneys.9
- Thyroid warning. Semaglutide caused thyroid tumours in rodents. The US label says people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or MEN 2, should not use it; tell your doctor if this applies.9
- Not in pregnancy. The label says to stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.9

What is the Wegovy pill, and is it in India?
The Wegovy pill is a 25 mg daily semaglutide tablet for weight, approved in the US in December 2025. We found no Indian approval.
The US drug regulator (FDA) approved it on 22 December 2025, for weight loss and to lower heart risk.20 Novo planned its US launch for early January 2026.20 The US label starts at 1.5 mg a day and steps up to 25 mg from day 91.21
Adults without diabetes. 64 weeks.8 Kilograms are for someone who starts at 90 kg (our arithmetic).
Average share of body weight lost8
Had stomach side effects8
So about 32 in 100 more had stomach effects on the pill.
The trial, OASIS 4, gave 307 adults without diabetes the pill or a dummy pill, alongside diet and exercise advice.8 It ran at 22 sites in 4 countries and was paid for by Novo.8
In India, Novo said in December 2025 that a launch was “subject to internal decisions and due approvals”.22 By 5 October 2026 we found no CDSCO approval and no Indian MRP. The weekly Wegovy injection is sold here.10 Guide 6 lists what is approved.
In the US, Novo has also applied for a 25 mg Ozempic tablet for type 2 diabetes. A decision is expected by the end of 2026.6
Is a “GLP 1 tablet” the same thing?
Not always. An Indian diabetes tablet called “Glp 1mg” is glimepiride, an older medicine that is not a GLP‑1 at all.
Glimepiride belongs to a group called sulfonylureas.23 It can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), especially with alcohol, other diabetes medicines or a missed meal.23
The brand name on a strip can mislead. The medicine name under it is what counts: a semaglutide tablet lists semaglutide.14
Questions people ask
Is Rybelsus the same as Ozempic?
Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic in India is a weekly injection; Rybelsus is a daily tablet. The doses don't convert milligram for milligram, so one can't be swapped for the other without a doctor.9
Is Rybelsus approved for weight loss in India?
No. In India, Rybelsus is approved for type 2 diabetes. Using it only for weight would be off-label, which is a decision for a doctor, not a pharmacy.3
Is there a generic Rybelsus in India?
Yes. Torrent has sold Sembolic and Semalix tablets since March 2026. Dr Reddy's launched Obeda tablets in May 2026. All come in 3, 7 and 14 mg and are approved for type 2 diabetes.12,4,5
Is the Wegovy pill available in India?
We found no Indian approval as of 5 October 2026. The US approved the 25 mg Wegovy pill in December 2025. Novo said an India launch depends on its own decision and regulators' approval.20,22
Why must semaglutide tablets be taken on an empty stomach?
Very little of the tablet is absorbed, and food or drink reduces it further. The US label says to take it in the morning with up to 120 mL of plain water. Then wait at least 30 minutes.9
How we researched this
We found no Indian package insert online for any semaglutide tablet. So on 5 October 2026 we read the US labels for Rybelsus, Ozempic tablets and Wegovy. We say “US label” wherever we use them. We also read CDSCO expert-committee minutes on tablets (25 March 2025). On who may prescribe, we read the April 2023 and February 2024 minutes. We read Novo's announcements and the OASIS 4 trial in the NEJM.
Prices: Obeda's comes from a dated news report of the maker's launch price. We found no maker or news price for Torrent's tablets or Rybelsus. For those we used the MRP printed on 2 or more pharmacy listings that agreed. We never use discounted selling prices.
We found no Indian approval for the Wegovy pill or the 1.5, 4 and 9 mg tablets, but we may have missed later committee minutes. We could not confirm Semalix tablet MRPs at every strength. We also could not rule out other companies now selling semaglutide tablets in India.
Before you move on
- India has no Ozempic tablet. Semaglutide tablets here are Rybelsus, Sembolic, Semalix and Obeda.
- All of them are approved in India for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss.
- The tablet routine is strict: empty stomach, a little plain water, then 30 minutes before food.
- Sembolic, Semalix and Obeda are also the names of injections. Check the form on the box.
- The 25 mg Wegovy pill is a US product; we found no Indian approval.
