Which weight-loss injections are approved in India?

The weight-loss injections and medicines in India, brand by brand, set against diabetes-only brands and clinic "fat-loss" shots.

The short answer

Semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy, Poviztra, some generics) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Yurpeak) are weekly GLP-1 injections sold here for weight. A CDSCO panel also backed one liraglutide pen for weight in 2025. Orlistat is an older capsule. Ozempic and Trulicity are diabetes medicines. Clinic "fat-loss" shots are not approved weight treatments.

Before you go further
  • Every medicine below is prescription-only. They can't be bought over the counter.26
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.39
  • Risks are real: see Guide 5: Side effects and risks.
  • Some batches of three generic semaglutide brands were recalled in July 2026.38 Check your pack against the list in Guide 6.
  • No promise of results. Approval means a medicine is allowed for a use, not that it will work for you.
  • We list brands as facts. We don't recommend any brand, company or seller.

Key takeaways

  • Semaglutide 2.4 mg and tirzepatide are the weekly GLP‑1 injections sold in India for weight, as Wegovy, Poviztra, Mounjaro, Yurpeak and some generics.3, 7, 10, 12, 14
  • A CDSCO expert panel recommended Eris Lifesciences' liraglutide pen for weight management on 6 February 2025; we found no report of its final approval or launch.35
  • Generic semaglutides from Sun Pharma, Alkem and Zydus were cleared for weight management after Phase 3 trials, which Sun Pharma and Alkem say were run in India.13, 14, 15
  • Ozempic is approved in India for type 2 diabetes only, so a prescription for weight alone is "off-label".17, 18
  • The US regulator has approved only one fat-dissolving injection, Kybella, and only for fat under the chin, not for weight loss.28, 29

Which injections are approved for weight management in India?

Semaglutide 2.4 mg and tirzepatide are the weekly GLP‑1 injections sold in India for weight management, under several brand names.3, 10, 12, 14 A CDSCO panel has also backed one liraglutide pen for weight.35

India's drug regulator is the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). Its expert panel recommended semaglutide's pens up to 2.4 mg in August 2021, in line with the US-approved use.2 CDSCO records show semaglutide pens in those strengths approved on 20 April 2022, "for various indication".1 That record names no brand and doesn't list the uses. Wegovy went on sale in June 2025.3

Tirzepatide was approved here for type 2 diabetes on 19 January 2024.8 In June 2024 the expert panel recommended it for "chronic weight management" too.9 Lilly launched it as Mounjaro on 20 March 2025, after CDSCO's marketing authorisation.10 We could not find the date of a formal weight approval, so the table shows the panel date.

Sources disagree on Mounjaro. Lilly calls it a treatment for obesity, overweight and type 2 diabetes.10 Cipla, which sells it as Yurpeak, says Lilly received DCGI approval and lists chronic weight management among its uses.12 But a 2026 review from AIIMS Bhopal says Mounjaro is approved for diabetes and used for obesity as well.24 We can't settle this from published records.

Liraglutide is a third case. On 6 February 2025, CDSCO's panel recommended Eris Lifesciences' liraglutide 6 mg/ml pen "for the treatment of weight management".35 It asked for a Phase IV trial after approval.35 We found no report of a final approval or a launch for weight.

The table separates weight uses from diabetes-only launches. Within each group, brands are listed A to Z, not ranked.

Dates come from CDSCO panel minutes, CDSCO's 2024 new-drug list, press releases and named news reports, checked 5 Oct 2026. Where we found no formal approval date, we give the panel recommendation or the launch date and say which. Not a full list: at least 17 generic semaglutide versions were on sale by 31 March 2026.17 For MRPs, see Guide 6.

Why isn't Ozempic on the weight list?

Ozempic and Wegovy contain the same medicine, semaglutide, but Ozempic is indicated for diabetes, while Wegovy is prescribed for obesity and weight management.17

Ozempic launched here in December 2025 as a diabetes treatment, in 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg strengths.18 Wegovy's doses go up to 2.4 mg.3 Using a medicine outside its approved use is called "off-label". Business Standard reports that Ozempic is widely prescribed off-label for weight loss.18 That is a doctor's decision, and it is not the same as an approval.

Generics are approved brand by brand. Dr Reddy's Obeda and Glenmark's GLIPIQ were launched for diabetes, while Sun Pharma's Noveltreat was launched for weight.16 Alkem and Zydus hold both uses.15, 16 Sun Pharma, Alkem and Zydus won their weight approvals after CDSCO's expert panel accepted their Phase 3 trial reports.13 Sun Pharma and Alkem say those trials were run in India.14, 15 So the word "semaglutide" on a pack doesn't tell you what that brand is approved for.

Tablets are different again. Rybelsus, the semaglutide tablet, is approved in India for type 2 diabetes.19 A 2026 review from AIIMS Bhopal says oral semaglutide is not formally approved for obesity here.24 Our Ozempic tablets post covers it.

Who can prescribe these injections, and who are they meant for?

Every injection in the table is prescription-only. A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.39

CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.40, 41

When CDSCO's panel first recommended semaglutide's weight pens in 2021, it set 2 conditions. Only endocrinologists should prescribe it, and treatment should run up to 68 weeks, the length of the trials.2 For teenagers, the 2026 recommendation names endocrinologists or paediatricians.4

The approvals use international weight cut-offs. The generic weight approvals cover adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more.13 They also cover a BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure.13

Those are drug cut-offs, not India's definition of obesity. A 2009 Indian consensus counts a BMI of 23 to 24.9 as overweight and 25 or more as obesity.42 India's obesity guideline (ESI 2025) uses lower numbers for Indians. It says a doctor may consider medicines at a BMI above 27, or above 25 with a related condition.25

A BMI number starts a conversation with a doctor. It isn't a pass. ESI also says these medicines don't replace changes to food and activity.25 Guide 4 covers who should, and shouldn't, consider them.

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are common: feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and bloating.25
  • Pancreatitis (a swollen pancreas) is a listed warning.25
  • Gallbladder problems: gallstones and an inflamed gallbladder.25
  • Kidneys: sudden (acute) kidney injury is a listed warning.25
  • Thyroid warning: ruled out by India's ESI 2025 obesity guideline for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2; tell your doctor if this applies. Not in pregnancy or breastfeeding.25

What are the "fat-loss injections" that clinics sell?

Outside the approved medicines, the name "fat-loss injection" covers at least three kinds of shot: fat-dissolving shots, vitamin "MIC" shots and HCG hormone shots.28, 32, 34

  • Fat-dissolving (lipolysis) shots. Chemicals are injected into a pocket of fat to break down fat cells. Common ingredients are phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate.28
  • MIC or "lipotropic" shots. These usually mix methionine, inositol and choline, often with vitamin B12.34
  • HCG shots. HCG is a hormone. In the US, approved HCG is prescription-only, for fertility and some hormone problems, not weight.32

None of these is a GLP‑1 medicine, and none appears in the table above. The drug regulator has warned that promoting GLP‑1 obesity medicines with guaranteed weight-loss results may count as misleading.27 By 1 April 2026, officials had inspected 49 businesses over the sale and promotion of GLP‑1 medicines, including weight-loss clinics.26

Do fat-dissolving injections work, and are they safe?

Only one fat-dissolving drug, deoxycholic acid (Kybella), is approved in the US, and only to treat fat under the chin.28, 29 It isn't approved as a weight-loss treatment.29

Kybella's US label says its use outside the chin area "has not been established and is not recommended".29 Treatment is up to 6 sessions, at least a month apart.29 In the first main trial, 70% improved by at least one grade on both doctor and patient ratings. With a dummy injection, 19% did.29

Side effects at the injection site were near-universal: 96% on Kybella against 81% on dummy injections.29 Swelling hit 87% (against 43%) and numbness 66% (against 6%).29 About 4 in 100 had nerve injury that caused an uneven smile. It went away in every case, after 44 days at the middle (median).29

The US regulator (FDA) warns about unapproved fat-dissolving products sold as Aqualyx, Lipodissolve, Lipo Lab and Kabelline.28 It has reports of permanent scars, serious infections, skin deformities, cysts and deep, painful knots.28

India note. A 2019 Indian study said Kybella and its Canadian twin weren't available in India. So the authors tested a generic deoxycholic acid under the chin in 50 people.30 Most needed 3 sessions, and the abstract describes no comparison group.30 We found no CDSCO approval for any fat-dissolving injection.

Do MIC, vitamin B12 or HCG shots help you lose weight?

We found no good evidence that MIC, B12 or HCG shots help weight loss, and the US approves no HCG product for it.31, 32, 34

Vitamin B12. Mayo Clinic says there's no solid proof that B12 shots help you lose weight.31 Doctors prescribe them for B12 deficiency and a type of anaemia (pernicious anaemia).31

MIC or lipotropic shots. They are not FDA-approved for weight loss, and most claims for them rest on personal stories.34 We found no controlled trial testing MIC shots for weight loss.

HCG. The FDA says HCG "has not been demonstrated to be effective therapy in the treatment of obesity".32 HCG plans come with a very low-calorie diet. The FDA says that diet raises the risk of gallstones, salt imbalances (electrolyte imbalance) and an irregular heartbeat.32 These are US statements; we found no Indian approval of HCG for weight.

Is there an approved weight-loss tablet in India?

Orlistat, a capsule, is the older weight-loss medicine available in India, and no semaglutide tablet is formally approved here for weight.24

Orlistat blocks an enzyme that digests fat (a lipase), so some fat passes out of the body.25 Its side effects include fatty stools, oily spotting and low levels of some vitamins.25 Our orlistat vs GLP‑1 post compares the two.

What about Saxenda? Saxenda is liraglutide at 3 mg a day. Its US label covers weight reduction (US label, not an Indian one).37 We found no Saxenda approval or launch in India. Eris's liraglutide pen, backed for weight by CDSCO's panel in February 2025, is the closest case.35 We found no report of its final approval or launch.

The other liraglutide brands we found, Victoza, Lirafit and Biocon's, were launched or approved for type 2 diabetes.20, 21, 36 CDSCO's panel noted that Biocon's UK approval covered weight, but Biocon asked for diabetes in India.22 Still, the 2026 AIIMS Bhopal review lists liraglutide among the obesity medicines available in India.24

Food and activity changes, older pills, GLP‑1 medicines and surgery are compared side by side in Guide 3: Your options.

Questions people ask

Is Ozempic approved for weight loss in India?

No. Ozempic is approved in India for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy and its second brand Poviztra, and some generic semaglutides, are approved for weight management.17, 7, 14, 15

Is Mounjaro approved for weight loss in India?

Sources disagree. Lilly launched Mounjaro in March 2025, after CDSCO authorisation, as a treatment for obesity, overweight and type 2 diabetes. A 2026 AIIMS Bhopal review says it is approved for diabetes and used for obesity. We found no published date for a formal weight approval.10, 24

Is Saxenda available in India?

We found no Saxenda approval or launch in India. A CDSCO panel recommended Eris's liraglutide pen for weight management in February 2025. We found no report of its final approval or launch. The other liraglutide brands we found are for type 2 diabetes.20, 21, 35

Are fat-dissolving injections safe?

In the US, only Kybella is approved, and only for fat under the chin. The FDA has reports of scars, serious infections and skin deformities from unapproved products.28, 29

Can you get a weight-loss injection without a prescription in India?

No. GLP-1 medicines can't be bought over the counter. A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.39

How we researched this

We read 7 sets of CDSCO expert-panel minutes (April 2023 to March 2026) and CDSCO's 2024 new-drug list. We added company press releases and named news reports, all opened on 5 October 2026.

Where we found no formal approval date, the table gives the panel recommendation or the launch date, and says which. Some sources are American: the Kybella and Wegovy labels, and the warnings on fat-dissolving shots and HCG. We found no Indian equivalent.

On 5 October 2026 we checked the top 3 search results for "weight loss injection india". All 3 were clinic pages. None named a CDSCO approval. One described the injections it listed, including lipotropic and HCG shots, as "medically approved treatments".

We found no CDSCO approval date for Ozempic or Poviztra, so we show launch or announcement dates. Victoza's 2010 dates come from Novo Nordisk's launch press release. Where sources disagree, as on Mounjaro's weight approval, we say so. We found no controlled trial of MIC shots for weight loss. We left prices off this page; Guide 6 lists MRPs.

Before you move on

  • Semaglutide 2.4 mg and tirzepatide are the GLP‑1 injections sold in India for weight. A CDSCO panel also backed a liraglutide pen in 2025.
  • Ozempic, Rybelsus, Victoza and Trulicity were launched or approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight.
  • Generic semaglutides are approved brand by brand; some cover weight, some only diabetes.
  • Fat-dissolving, MIC and HCG shots are not approved weight-loss treatments.
  • All GLP‑1 medicines need a prescription from a doctor.
