How do you store Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy pens in UAE heat?

The label limits for each pen, what 50°C summers mean for cars and deliveries, what to do if a pen got hot or froze, and the tablets.

The short answer

Keep unused pens in the fridge at 2 to 8°C and never freeze them. Once in use, the EU labels allow a Mounjaro KwikPen 30 days, and Wegovy or Ozempic pens 6 weeks, but only below 30°C. UAE summers pass 50°C, so a pen left in a car or at the door can be ruined.

What temperature can GLP‑1 pens handle?

Unused pens need a fridge at 2 to 8°C. Once in use, each pen can sit out for a set time, but never above 30°C, and never frozen.1,2,3

The table shows the EU label limits. The UAE has both Mounjaro KwikPens and single-dose Mounjaro pens on its official drug list, and they have different rules.8,1

The US labels give some pens longer: 56 days in use for a Wegovy FlexTouch pen.5 That is a different pack. Follow the leaflet in the box you were given.

Why does the UAE summer matter so much?

Every pen’s in-use limit is 30°C, and UAE summers go far past it. The National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8°C at Sweihan on 1 August 2025.4,1

The next day, Dubai was forecast to reach 44°C and Abu Dhabi 46°C. Dubai’s overnight low was 35°C.4 So even a night outdoors is above every pen’s in-use limit.

  • Cars. The EU Ozempic leaflet says: “Do not leave the pen in a car or another place where it can get too hot or too cold.”3
  • Sunlight. It also says not to inject a pen that has been in direct sunlight, because the medicine may not work as intended.3
  • The 30°C line. Lilly’s UK medical team says patients should take steps so the KwikPen is never above 30°C during its 30 days of use.10

Abu Dhabi’s obesity standard even lists high outdoor heat as a reason people here exercise less.11 The same heat is the reason to plan where your pen sits.

How should you store pens at home?

In the fridge, in the original carton or with the cap on, away from the cooling element. Take the needle off after each injection.3,2,10

  • Not against the back wall. The EU Ozempic and Wegovy labels say keep pens away from the cooling element, where they could freeze.3,2
  • Cap on, carton kept. Light can harm these medicines, so the labels say keep the cap on or keep the pen in its carton.3,1
  • No needle left on. Lilly says storing a KwikPen with a needle attached can let air bubbles form, which may affect the dose.10
  • In and out is fine. Lilly says moving an in-use KwikPen in and out of the fridge within its 30 days does not affect it.10

What should you check when pens are delivered?

That they arrive cold, are handed to you, and look right. The EU labels allow pens to travel to you unrefrigerated, but only below 30°C and only for 48 to 72 hours.1,2

In a UAE summer, a box left at the door can pass 30°C quickly. Ask for the pens to be handed to you, and put them straight in the fridge.

  • Look at the medicine. The Mounjaro leaflet says don’t use it if the pen is damaged, or the medicine is cloudy, discoloured or has particles in it.1
  • Ozempic and Wegovy should be clear and colourless or almost colourless.3
  • Licensed pharmacies only. Abu Dhabi’s health department warns against buying these medicines without a prescription, online or through adverts, after fake Ozempic and Mounjaro were sold on social media.12

What if a pen got too hot or froze?

A pen that has frozen must not be used. A pen that went above 30°C is outside its label, so ask your pharmacist before you use it.1,2,13

Novo Nordisk’s US medical team says Ozempic can be used only if it has not been above 30°C or below about 2°C.13 It also says to look for solid bits (precipitation), or a change in colour or clarity, which can mean the medicine has lost strength.13

You can’t always see heat damage. If in doubt, keep the pen and its box, and ask the pharmacy that supplied it. A suspected faulty or fake product can be reported to the Ministry of Health and Prevention hotline, 800 11111.14

Frozen means finished. All three EU labels say do not freeze. The Mounjaro leaflet says: “If the pen has been frozen, DO NOT USE.”1,2,3

How do you carry pens in the heat or on a flight?

Close to you, in a cool bag, and never touching an ice pack. Lilly says not to put pens in checked luggage, because the hold can be too hot or too cold.15

Lilly says the pen must not touch ice, frozen gel packs or freezing temperatures.15 Diabetes UK gives the same advice for insulin, which also needs a fridge.16

Do Wegovy tablets or Foundayo need the fridge?

No. The EU and UK labels say they need no special temperature. Their US labels say 20 to 25°C, with short spells up to 30°C allowed.2,9,5,6

Those labels were written for cooler countries. In the UAE, that means a cool room indoors, not a car or a hot bag. Keep Wegovy tablets in their original pack, away from damp, and Foundayo away from light.2,9

Both tablets are approved in the UAE: Foundayo since April 2026 and the Wegovy pill since June 2026.17,18

Questions people ask

Can I leave Mounjaro out of the fridge in the UAE?

Once in use, the EU label allows a KwikPen up to 30 days, below 30°C. In a UAE summer most places outdoors are hotter, so the fridge is safer.1,4

Can I use a Mounjaro pen that was left in the car?

Not without checking. A car in summer is far above 30°C, and the labels say keep pens below that. Ask your pharmacist before using it.1,3

What if my pen froze in the fridge?

Don’t use it. The EU labels for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic all say a frozen pen must not be used.1,2,3

Do Wegovy tablets need to be refrigerated?

No. The EU label says they need no special temperature. Keep them in the original pack, away from damp and light.2

How do I get rid of used pens and needles in the UAE?

We found no official home sharps scheme. A 2018 report said the UAE had no rules for hazardous medical waste at home, such as used syringes. Use a rigid container and ask your pharmacy or clinic.19

How we researched this

On 12 Oct 2026 we read the storage sections (6.3 and 6.4) and leaflets of the EU labels for Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic, and the UK and US labels for Wegovy tablets and Foundayo. We could not find UAE pack leaflets online, so we name the country of each label.

Temperatures come from a Gulf News report of National Center of Meteorology readings. We also used Abu Dhabi’s official drug list to check which Mounjaro pens are registered. We name no pharmacy, delivery service or cool-bag brand.
