Can you travel to or from the UAE with Mounjaro, Ozempic or Wegovy pens?
Entering the UAE with pens, flying out, keeping pens cool from a 45°C car park to the cabin, time zones and missed doses, and running out abroad.
Written for the United Arab Emirates. Other country versions are coming.
Yes. Travellers entering the UAE must carry a prescription for the medicine they bring; only controlled medicines need Ministry approval in advance. Lilly says keep pens with you, not in checked luggage. Once in use, pens must stay below 30°C and must never freeze.
Key takeaways
- The UAE embassy says travellers must carry a prescription for the quantity of medicine they bring, and only controlled medicines need Ministry approval first.1
- Controlled medicines brought into the UAE are limited to 3 months’ supply, and the Ministry’s permit is free, Gulf News reported in August 2025.2
- Lilly’s UK medical team says Mounjaro pens should not go in checked luggage, because the hold can be too hot or too cold.3
- On the EU labels, a missed Mounjaro dose can be taken within 4 days, and a missed Wegovy or Ozempic dose within 5 days.4,5,6
- Abu Dhabi’s health department warns that unregistered GLP-1 products are sold online and on social media, so supplies bought that way may be fake.7

Can you bring GLP-1 pens into the UAE?
Yes, with a prescription. The UAE embassy says travellers must carry the prescription for the quantity of medicine they bring.1
- GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in the UAE. They should only be used under medical supervision, with a prescription from a doctor licensed in the UAE.7
- Label facts here come from the EU label (EMA), the UK label or the US label (FDA), named each time. We could not find the UAE pack leaflets online, so check the leaflet in your own pack.
- Every risk of these medicines is in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.
- This post describes labels, rules and trials. It is not a plan for your treatment, and no dose or brand guarantees any result.
The embassy says controlled medicines need approval from the Ministry of Health and Prevention before you travel. “All other medication”, including prescription medicines that are not controlled, “does not need prior approval”.1
The UAE’s controlled groups are narcotic and psychotropic medicines, plus a semi-controlled group, listed by the Ministry.2 We could not open that list to check each GLP‑1 brand ourselves. If you are unsure, the embassy suggests asking the nearest UAE embassy or consulate.1
- What the prescription shows. For controlled medicines, the Ministry asks for your full name, the medicine, dose, form, length of treatment, date and doctor’s name.2 It is a sensible standard for any prescription you carry.
- How much. Controlled medicines are capped at 3 months’ supply.2 Bring what the prescription covers.
What about flying out of the UAE?
Check your destination’s rules first, then keep pens in your hand luggage. Lilly says not to put them in checked luggage, because the hold can be too hot or too cold.3
- Destination rules differ. Lilly suggests checking with the embassy of the country you are visiting.3
- Security scanners. Lilly says airport X-rays are not known to affect tirzepatide.3
- Split supplies. Diabetes UK advises keeping insulin in hand luggage, because the hold is very cold and bags get lost.8
How do you keep pens cool from the car park to the plane?
Use a cool bag, and keep the pen from touching ice. Once in use, the EU labels allow 30 days (Mounjaro) or 6 weeks (Wegovy, Ozempic), but only below 30°C.4,5,6,3
The journey to the airport is the risky part in summer. In early August 2025, Dubai was forecast to reach 44°C and Abu Dhabi 46°C, with a 35°C overnight low in Dubai.9 The EU Ozempic leaflet says never leave the pen in a car.6
Lilly says the pen must not touch ice, frozen gel packs or freezing temperatures.3 A frozen pen must not be used.4,5 Tablets are easier: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo need no fridge, only their original pack.5,10
Full label limits are in storing GLP‑1 pens in UAE heat.
Four checks for people already on Mounjaro, Ozempic or Wegovy in the UAE: supply, storage, side effects and review.
What about time zones and missed doses?
Weekly pens have some slack: a missed Mounjaro dose can be taken within 4 days, and Wegovy or Ozempic within 5 days, say the EU labels.4,5,6
| Medicine | If you miss a dose |
|---|---|
| Mounjaro (weekly) | Take it within 4 days; after that, skip it and go back to your usual day. You can change your weekly day if doses stay at least 3 days apart4 |
| Wegovy or Ozempic pen (weekly) | Take it within 5 days; after that, skip it5,6 |
| Wegovy pill (daily) | Skip the missed tablet and take the next one the following day11 |
| Foundayo (daily) | Take it as soon as you can, but never more than one tablet a day10 |
EU labels for the pens; UK labels for the tablets. Checked 12 Oct 2026.

What if you run out abroad?
Take enough for the whole trip plus a margin. Buying abroad, especially online, risks fakes: Abu Dhabi has warned of unregistered GLP-1 products sold online and on social media.7
Abu Dhabi has also warned against buying Ozempic or Mounjaro without a prescription, online or through adverts, after counterfeits were sold on social media.12 In 2024 the Ministry of Health and Prevention warned of a fake Mounjaro 15 mg pack, labelled in English and Arabic, reported by the maker. Its lab could not identify tirzepatide in it.13
Our post on fake Ozempic and Mounjaro in the UAE explains how to check a pen.
- A fake or heat-damaged pen may contain the wrong dose, the wrong substance, or nothing that works.13,6
- Stomach effects are very common on these medicines and add to dehydration on long, hot journeys.4,5
- Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea can harm the kidneys.4

How we researched this
On 12 Oct 2026 we read the UAE embassy’s page on permitted medicines, a Gulf News guide to the Ministry’s import permit (August 2025), the EU and UK labels, and Abu Dhabi’s counterfeit alerts. Lilly’s travel answer and Diabetes UK’s travel page were already checked for our UK post.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention website did not load for us, so we could not open its controlled-medicine list directly. We left out other countries’ entry rules: they change, and each embassy is the source. We name no airline, pharmacy or cool-bag brand.
Before you move on
- Carry the prescription for the pens you bring into the UAE.
- Pens in hand luggage, in a cool bag, never touching ice.
- Never leave pens in a car on the way to the airport.
- Check your destination's rules with its embassy.
