The short answer

Both contain semaglutide. The pill is taken every day on an empty stomach; the injection once a week. No trial has compared them directly: in separate trials, people lost 13.6% on the 25 mg pill over 64 weeks and 14.9% on the 2.4 mg injection over 68 weeks. Side effects are the same kind, mostly nausea.

Key takeaways

  • No trial has compared the Wegovy pill with the Wegovy injection; their own trials gave 13.6% over 64 weeks and 14.9% over 68 weeks.1,2
  • Nausea was common with both forms: 47 in 100 people on the 25 mg pill and 44 in 100 on the injection, against 16 to 19 in 100 on dummies.1,2
  • The Wegovy pill is taken daily on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait, while the injection is given once a week at any time.1,2
  • At the maintenance doses, Abu Dhabi’s official prices are AED 1,610 for 30 pills of 25 mg and AED 1,712 for a pen of four 2.4 mg doses.8

Are the Wegovy pill and the injection the same medicine?

Yes. Both contain semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk. The pill is a daily tablet at much higher doses, because only about 1 to 2% of a swallowed dose reaches the blood.1,2

Before you go further
  • GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in the UAE and should only be used under medical supervision.10
  • Label facts come from the UK label for the tablets and the EU label for the injection, named each time. We could not find the UAE leaflets online.
  • Prices are official prices to the public. We name no pharmacy or clinic and rank nothing by price.
  • Every risk is in Guide 5: Side effects and risks. Nothing here promises a result.

The medicine is what works in your body; the brand is the name on the box. Paracetamol is a medicine, and Panadol is one brand of it. Semaglutide is sold here under four brand names:6,8

  • Wegovy injection (FlexTouch pen), for weight.6
  • Wegovy pill, for weight, approved in the UAE on 1 June 2026.3
  • Ozempic (pen) and Rybelsus (tablets), for type 2 diabetes.6

The doses are not interchangeable: 25 mg in a daily tablet is not the same as 25 mg injected. The UK tablets label says the effect of switching “cannot easily be predicted”, because absorption from tablets varies more.1

Does the pill work as well as the injection?

No trial has compared them directly. In separate trials, people lost 13.6% on the 25 mg pill over 64 weeks and 14.9% on the 2.4 mg injection over 68 weeks.1,2

How these trials work:

  • People are split into groups at random.
  • One group takes the medicine; the other takes a dummy (a placebo) that looks the same.
  • Everyone gets the same advice on diet and activity.
  • The gap between the groups is what the medicine added.

Sources: UK Wegovy tablets label, Table 2; EU Wegovy label, Table 4. Checked 14 Oct 2026.

For someone who starts at 100 kg (220 lb), 13.6% is about 14 kg (30 lb) and 14.9% about 15 kg (33 lb). These are averages: some people lose much more, some very little.1,2

  • Pill: 76 in 100 people lost at least 5%, against 31 in 100 on dummy tablets. Put the other way, about 24 in 100 did not.1
  • Injection: 84 in 100 lost at least 5%, against 31 in 100 on dummy injections. About 16 in 100 did not.2

Are the side effects different?

They are the same kind, since it is the same medicine: mostly nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, worst while the dose goes up.1,2

  • Nausea: 47 in 100 on the pill against 19 in 100 on dummy tablets; 44 in 100 on the injection against 16 in 100.1,2
  • Vomiting: 31 in 100 on the pill against 6 in 100; 25 in 100 on the injection against 6 in 100.1,2
  • Stopping for good because of stomach effects: about 3 in 100 on the pill and 4 in 100 on the injection.1,2
  • Hair loss: 6.4 in 100 on the pill against 2.0 on dummy tablets; 2.5 in 100 on the injection against 1.0.1,2

These come from separate trials, so small gaps between the two forms may not be real differences.

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are very common (more than 1 in 10) on both labels.1,2
  • Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea can harm the kidneys.1,2
  • Pancreatitis (a swollen, inflamed pancreas) is uncommon, 1 in 100 to 1 in 1,000; gallstones are common, 1 in 10 to 1 in 100, on both labels.1,2
  • Low blood sugar is more likely if you also take insulin or a sulphonylurea.1
  • Not in pregnancy. Stop either form at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.1,2

Get help now: call 998 for an ambulance, or 999.11 Call for severe stomach pain that won’t go away, or vomiting or diarrhoea that stops you keeping fluids down. Call too for a swollen face or trouble breathing.1,2

How different is the routine?

The pill is every morning with strict rules; the injection is once a week at any time. Heat matters more for the pen.1,2

  • Pill: after at least 8 hours without food, swallow it whole with up to half a glass of water, then wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other tablets.1
  • Injection: once a week into the belly, thigh or upper arm, with or without food.2
  • Missed dose: skip a missed pill and take the next one the following day. A missed injection can be given within 5 days; after that, skip it.1,2
  • Storage: the UK label sets no temperature limit for the tablets. An injection pen in use lasts 6 weeks below 30 °C or in a fridge.1,2

UAE summers go far above 30 °C. Our post on storing pens in the heat covers cars and deliveries, and GLP‑1s in Ramadan covers timing around Suhoor and Iftar.

ToolWhat would a year cost?

The cost calculator uses the same official Abu Dhabi prices, dose by dose, for the months you choose.

What does each form cost in the UAE?

Prices are fixed nationally. At the maintenance doses, 30 pills of 25 mg cost AED 1,610 and a pen of four 2.4 mg doses costs AED 1,712.8

  • Pill: AED 779 for 30 tablets of 1.5 or 4 mg, AED 1,199 at 9 mg and AED 1,610 at 25 mg.8
  • Injection: AED 743.50 for a pen of 0.25 or 0.5 mg doses, AED 1,145.50 at 1 mg, AED 1,440 at 1.7 mg and AED 1,712 at 2.4 mg. Each pen holds 4 weekly doses.8

A 30-tablet pack lasts 30 days and a pen lasts 28. A year at the maintenance dose comes to about AED 19,535 for the pill and AED 22,256 for the injection, by our arithmetic. Doctor visits and tests are extra.8

Most people pay themselves. Dubai’s basic plan excludes weight-loss medicines, and Daman covers them only inside the Thiqa obesity programme.9,6 More in GLP‑1 prices in the UAE.

What about Rybelsus and Ozempic?

They are the diabetes versions of the same medicine: Rybelsus is the tablet and Ozempic the weekly injection. Daman lists both for type 2 diabetes.6

  • Rybelsus: 3 mg a day for 30 days, then 7 mg, and 14 mg if blood sugar needs more control (US label). AED 641 for 30 tablets at every strength.12,8
  • Ozempic: 0.25 mg a week for 4 weeks, then 0.5 mg, then 1 or 2 mg if needed (EU label). AED 743.50, 1,146 or 1,550 a pen, by strength.13,8

The US Rybelsus label has its own instructions for moving from semaglutide injections to tablets; a doctor follows them.12 Prices for each are in Rybelsus price in the UAE and Ozempic price in the UAE.

Pill or injection: what does a doctor weigh?

A doctor decides, and this page doesn’t recommend either form. In Abu Dhabi, the obesity-certified doctor decides when to start a medicine.14

Things a doctor may weigh:

  • Your mornings: whether you can keep the pill’s empty-stomach rules every day.1
  • Needles: whether a weekly injection suits you.2
  • Other tablets you take in the morning, because of the pill’s 30-minute wait.1
  • Heat and travel: pens in use must stay below 30 °C.2
  • Moving between forms: the UK label says people on the 2.4 mg injection can move to the 25 mg tablet a week after their last injection, but the effect is hard to predict.1

The rules on who can be considered differ by emirate. Abu Dhabi’s standard starts at BMI 30 with a weight-related condition, or over 40.14 Dubai’s guideline allows BMI over 30, or 27 to 29.9 with a condition, after lifestyle changes alone haven’t worked.15 See Guide 6 for prescriptions.

Questions people ask

Is the Wegovy pill as strong as the injection?

No trial has compared them directly. In separate trials, the 25 mg pill gave 13.6% weight loss over 64 weeks and the 2.4 mg injection 14.9% over 68 weeks.1,2

Why is the pill dose so much higher?

Only about 1 to 2% of a swallowed dose reaches the blood, the UK label says, so tablets need far more semaglutide. The doses can’t be swapped mg for mg.1

Can I switch from Wegovy injections to the pill?

The UK label says people on the 2.4 mg injection can move to the 25 mg tablet a week after the last injection, though the effect is hard to predict. Your doctor decides.1

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

Same medicine, different use and doses. Rybelsus is for type 2 diabetes at 3, 7 or 14 mg; the Wegovy pill is for weight, up to 25 mg.6,12,1

Does the Wegovy pill need a fridge?

No. The UK label sets no special storage temperature for the tablets; keep them in the blister. Pens in use must stay below 30 °C.1,2

How we researched this

On 14 Oct 2026 we read the UK label for Wegovy tablets (OASIS 4), the EU label for the Wegovy injection (STEP 1 and its side-effect figures), the EU Ozempic label and the US Rybelsus label. UAE approvals come from dated UAE news reports and Novo Nordisk’s release; cover rules from Daman, the Dubai basic plan and Abu Dhabi’s health department.

Prices are the official “package price to public” on Abu Dhabi’s drug list, effective 2 October 2026, never a seller’s price. Monthly and yearly figures are our arithmetic, done the same way as our cost calculator.

Before you move on

  • Same medicine, semaglutide, in two forms.
  • No head-to-head trial: 13.6% on the pill, 14.9% on the injection, in separate trials.
  • Pill daily on an empty stomach; injection weekly at any time.
  • Prices are fixed; a doctor decides which form fits.
