Every GLP‑1 medicine sold in the UAE, at every dose: the price of a pack, and what that comes to a month and a year.

Prices here are the official "Package Price to Public" from Abu Dhabi's Shafafiya drug price list, in dirhams.1 What you pay depends on your insurance: these medicines are largely paid out of pocket, with cover usually limited to diabetes or specific metabolic conditions.2

Per month and per year. A year is 52 weeks: 52 weekly doses, or 364 days of a daily medicine. We work out the cost of one dose (or one day) from the pack, multiply it by 52 (or 364) for the year, and divide the year by 12 for a month. So a month of a weekly pen costs a little more than one pen of 4 doses: a year takes 13 pens, not 12. This is the method our cost calculator uses. Rounded to the nearest dirham.

How much does Mounjaro cost in the UAE?

The official price of Mounjaro is AED 1,734 at every dose, for a pack of 4 weekly doses. That comes to about AED 22,542 a year.1

How much does Wegovy pen cost in the UAE?

The official price of Wegovy pen is AED 743.50 at 0.25 and 0.5 mg, AED 1,145.50 at 1 mg, AED 1,440 at 1.7 mg and AED 1,712 at 2.4 mg, for a pack of 4 weekly doses. That comes to about AED 9,666–AED 22,256 a year.1

Is that what I pay?

It depends on your insurance. These medicines "remain largely out-of-pocket expenses", with cover usually limited to diabetes or specific metabolic conditions.2 In Abu Dhabi, Thiqa has its own rules for obesity medicines, with BMI bands, certified prescribers and progress targets,13 and Foundayo is covered for adults eligible for the Personalised Weight Management Programme.14

Which of these medicines are for type 2 diabetes only?

Trulicity, Victoza, Ozempic and Rybelsus are approved in the UAE for type 2 diabetes only, and the table labels them "Type 2 diabetes only".5,6,8,10 Some contain the same medicine as a brand approved for weight (Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide), but the approved uses, doses and price differ.

Why is a year 13 pens and not 12?

A weekly pen holds 4 doses, so it lasts 4 weeks. A year is 52 weeks, so it takes 13 pens, and a month (a twelfth of the year) costs a little more than one pen. For daily medicines we count 364 days. This is how our cost calculator counts.

Why don't you show the cheapest price or pharmacy prices?

We show the official Shafafiya prices only. Sellers' prices change often and differ from shop to shop, and listing them would turn a guide into a shopping list. That's why the table is grouped by medicine, never sorted by price, and names no pharmacy, clinic or online seller. How we show prices.
