Is Wegovy on the PBS?
No. As of October 2026, Wegovy (semaglutide) is not listed on the PBS for any use, so a Wegovy script is paid in full. The PBAC recommended it in November 2025 for some people with heart disease and obesity, but that listing has not happened. Ozempic and Trulicity are on the PBS for type 2 diabetes only.
What did the PBAC recommend?
In November 2025 the PBAC recommended Wegovy for adults with obesity who have already had a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke.1,2
As newsGP reported the criteria, a person would need a past heart attack, stroke or symptomatic peripheral arterial disease, plus a BMI of 35 or more. The BMI threshold is 32.5 for Asian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.2
The PBAC wants any subsidised access to GLP‑1 medicines for obesity to be a “slow and managed” roll-out, starting with groups such as people with established heart disease.3
Why isn't Wegovy listed yet?
Novo Nordisk lodged its listing documents on 27 February 2026, but the PBS status page marks them “Not Accepted” and says listing “Has not yet occurred”.1
The status page shows the steps that follow a recommendation: the company lodges documents, the department accepts them, and the medicine is listed. Wegovy is stuck at the second step. The page was last updated on 23 July 2026, and we found no listing date since.1 In January 2026 the federal Health Minister said the government would work with Novo Nordisk to agree a price, adding that it is “committed to listing every recommendation” the PBAC makes.7
A recommendation also covers only the group it names. Most people taking Wegovy for weight alone would not be covered by it.2
What does that mean if you take Wegovy now?
Without a PBS listing, a Wegovy script is a private script: you pay the full amount, not the capped PBS charge.4
The government's private health website says some extras policies pay part of the cost of prescription medicines that aren't on the PBS, usually with a co-payment and limits.4 The PBS does subsidise two GLP‑1 medicines, Ozempic and Trulicity, but only for type 2 diabetes when set criteria are met.5,6
