Does private health insurance cover Mounjaro?

The short answer

Sometimes, in part. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not on the PBS, and some private health policies pay a benefit toward prescription medicines that aren't on the PBS. Most insurers require a co-payment and limit how much you can claim, and policies differ. Check your own policy's pharmacy benefit before you count on it.

Before you go further
  • Every GLP‑1 medicine is prescription-only in Australia, so a prescriber has to assess you first.1
  • We don't publish medicine prices, and we don't name, rank or link to sellers or telehealth services.
  • Products sold online as “GLP‑1” drops, patches or peptides are not the same thing: see Do GLP‑1 patches or drops work?
  • Nothing here promises any result, and nothing here is for sale.

Which part of private cover might pay?

The government's private health website says you can arrange private health insurance “to cover many prescription medicines which aren't listed on the PBS”.2

It adds that most insurers “will require you to make a co-payment towards the cost and will have limits on how much you can claim”.2 Without such cover, you pay the full amount for non-PBS items.2 Mounjaro is one of them: Lilly stopped its PBS listing in 2026.3

What should you ask your insurer?

Policies set their own rules and limits, so the answer is in your own policy, not in a general rule.2

Questions worth asking:

  • Does my cover include a benefit for prescription medicines that aren't on the PBS?
  • How much does it pay per script, and how much per year?
  • Are medicines for weight management excluded?
  • Do I need to have held the cover for a set time before I can claim?

Does Medicare or the PBS help at all?

The PBS doesn't, because Mounjaro isn't listed; Medicare can cover the GP visit.2,3

Medicare pays the MBS fee for a GP visit outside hospital, and a bulk-billed visit costs you nothing, but it doesn't pay for non-PBS medicines.2 The same rules apply to Wegovy, which is also not PBS-listed.4 Ozempic is different for people with type 2 diabetes who meet the PBS criteria: there, the PBS lowers the cost, and a concession card lowers the maximum you pay.2,5 The cost of the medicine itself is explained in How much is Mounjaro in Australia?
