How much is Mounjaro in Australia?

The short answer

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not on the PBS, so in Australia you pay the full private price, which differs by strength. Australian advertising rules limit who may publish prescription-medicine prices, so we don't print them. A pharmacist can tell you the price for the strength on your script.

Before you go further
  • Every GLP‑1 medicine is prescription-only in Australia, so a prescriber has to assess you first.1
  • We don't publish medicine prices, and we don't name, rank or link to sellers or telehealth services.
  • Products sold online as “GLP‑1” drops, patches or peptides are not the same thing: see Do GLP‑1 patches or drops work?
  • Nothing here promises any result, and nothing here is for sale.

Why is there no PBS price for Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is not PBS-listed for any use, so there is no capped PBS charge and you pay the full amount.2,3

That applies to every use on its label: type 2 diabetes, weight management and sleep apnoea.2,4 On a PBS medicine you pay only part of the cost, up to a standard maximum, with a lower maximum for concession card holders.3 Mounjaro missed out because Lilly declined the price terms attached to the PBAC's March 2026 recommendation for type 2 diabetes.5 The full story is in Is Mounjaro on the PBS?

Why don't we publish a price?

Under TGA rules, price information about a prescription medicine generally counts as advertising, which only community pharmacies and a few other groups may publish.6

Even they may publish only price lists that meet set conditions, such as covering 25 medicines or more.6 The TGA also says advertising any GLP‑1 medicine to the public is illegal.7 We're an information site, so we leave prices to the people allowed to give them.

How do you find out what you'd pay?

Ask a pharmacist for the price of the strength on your script: each Mounjaro KwikPen holds four weekly doses, about a month.4

Doses start at 2.5 mg a week and can rise by 2.5 mg at a time, at least 4 weeks apart, up to 15 mg. Each strength has its own KwikPen, so what you pay can change as your dose changes.4 The July 2024 Australian Obesity Management Algorithm, which estimated monthly costs from pharmacy websites, shows the higher strengths costing more.8 If you have private extras cover, ask your insurer whether it pays toward non-PBS medicines; most set a co-payment and limits.3 The doctor's visit is a separate cost, and Medicare pays the MBS fee for a GP visit outside hospital.3 More on getting a script is in Can my GP prescribe Mounjaro? and Guide 6.

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are very common. In the weight trials on the Australian Mounjaro label, 25 to 29 in 100 people on 5 mg to 15 mg had nausea, against about 9 in 100 on a dummy injection.4
  • Gallstones and a swollen pancreas (acute pancreatitis) are both listed as uncommon (1 in 100 to 1 in 1,000) on the Australian Mounjaro label.4
  • The pill. The label advises switching to a non-oral method or adding a barrier method for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose rise.4
  • Pregnancy. Tirzepatide is pregnancy category D in Australia.8
