Is Zepbound available in Australia?

The short answer

No. Zepbound is Eli Lilly's US brand of tirzepatide for weight, and it isn't on Australia's register of medicines. In Australia, tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro, registered for type 2 diabetes, chronic weight management since September 2024, and sleep apnoea with obesity. It's the same medicine under a different brand.

What does the Australian register show?

A search of the register for tirzepatide on 12 October 2026 returned 18 products, all of them Mounjaro.1

They are single-dose pens, vials and multi-dose KwikPens.1 The TGA decided on Mounjaro's weight-management use on 9 September 2024.2 The sleep apnoea use was reported in June 2025.3 The label's weight criteria are a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition. In October 2026 the label also added type 2 diabetes in children aged 10 and over who weigh at least 50 kg.4

What is Zepbound?

Zepbound is tirzepatide from Eli Lilly, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on 8 November 2023.5

The US has separate brands for diabetes (Mounjaro) and weight (Zepbound). Australia uses the one name, Mounjaro, for both, and both brands come from the same company.1,4,5 So if you've read about Zepbound in US news, the Australian equivalent is Mounjaro, with the Australian label's own rules on who it's for.4

Why does the name matter?

A product sold online as “Zepbound” in Australia isn't a registered medicine here, and the TGA warns that imported GLP‑1 products may be fake.1,6

Compounded tirzepatide isn't a lawful alternative: pharmacists have been barred from compounding any GLP‑1 medicine since 1 October 2024.7 The TGA advises buying prescription medicines only from a local registered pharmacy.6 Mounjaro is not on the PBS; see Is Mounjaro on the PBS? Because it isn't PBS-listed, a Mounjaro script is paid in full, and a pharmacist can tell you the price.8,9 Who can prescribe it is in Can my GP prescribe Mounjaro? The medicines are compared in Guide 2.
