Before you go further. These are prescription-only medicines. A government statement of 1 April 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.5 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.25,26 They have real risks: read Side effects and risks first. A lower price doesn't make a medicine right for you.

All prices are MRP (the maker's list price), per month: four weekly doses or 30 days of tablets. Pharmacies and clinics may charge less or more. Where no maker or news source gives an MRP, we say “Not published”. Full dose = the highest dose sold in India for that use. Grouped by medicine, original brand first. Not sorted by price, and not a recommendation. Your doctor sets the medicine and the dose. Sources 2, 4, 10–13, 17–21. Same figures as Guide 6.

Common questions

Short answers, each with its source.

Is Ozempic available in India?
Yes. Novo Nordisk launched Ozempic in India on 12 December 2025. Here it's approved for type 2 diabetes, so using it for weight loss is off-label. Wegovy, the same medicine at higher doses, is approved for weight management.14,10
Is a GLP‑1 right for me?
Only a doctor who knows your health history can say. These medicines are approved to treat type 2 diabetes or obesity, alongside changes to food and activity.9,14 They are not for losing a few kilos before an event. Read Should I consider a GLP‑1? and Side effects and risks before you see a doctor.
What are the side effects?
The most common are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and stomach pain, mostly when starting or raising the dose. Less common but serious: inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), gallbladder problems, and kidney injury from dehydration. The US label also carries a thyroid tumour warning, and the medicine should not be used in pregnancy.9 More in Side effects and risks.
What's the difference between Mounjaro and Ozempic?
Mounjaro is tirzepatide, which acts on two gut hormones (GLP‑1 and GIP). Ozempic is semaglutide, which acts on one. In a head-to-head trial in adults with obesity, average weight loss was larger on tirzepatide. Results varied a lot between people, and stomach side effects were common on both.7
Are Indian generics the same as the original?
They contain the same molecule and need approval from CDSCO, India's drug regulator. Some, like Alkem's, ran their own trials in India. Quality varies by maker: some batches were recalled in July 2026.13,4
What happens when you stop taking it?
Weight usually comes back. A year after stopping semaglutide, trial participants had regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost.8
Who shouldn't take a GLP‑1?
Anyone who is pregnant, among others. The US label also rules them out for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2. A doctor will check your history first.9
What BMI counts as obesity for Indians?
India's 2009 consensus uses lower cut-offs than Western ones: overweight from a BMI of 23, obesity from 25. A waist over 90 cm in men or 80 cm in women is also a warning sign.15 A newer 2025 proposal goes further; the guide below explains it. These numbers mark health risk. They don't decide whether you need medicine. More in Weight and health in Indians.
