Why does food taste different or put me off on Mounjaro, Wegovy or Ozempic?

The short answer

Taste changes are a listed side effect of Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide) in the US labels; we found no public Indian ones. On Wegovy, 1.7% reported them, against 0.5% on placebo. Both medicines slow the stomach, and small trials found less liking for fatty foods. India's ESI 2025 guideline advises small, frequent meals.

Before you go further
  • GLP‑1 medicines such as Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.12
  • A government backgrounder of 1 Apr 2026 says only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.12
  • Side-effect figures come from the US labels, named each time. We found no public Indian label.
  • Foods are examples from the sources. We don’t name or rank food or drink brands.

Is a change in taste a side effect of Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic?

Yes. The US labels for Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy and Ozempic (both semaglutide) all list a change in taste (dysgeusia) as a side effect.1,3,4

In the US Wegovy weight-loss trials, 1.7% reported taste changes, against 0.5% on placebo (a dummy injection).3 In US Mounjaro diabetes trials, it was 0.1%, against none.1 The US Ozempic label lists it among effects seen in more than 0.4% of people.4

Other stomach effects are more common. On Wegovy, 7% had belching and 9% indigestion, against under 1% and 3% on placebo.3 In the same Mounjaro trials, 5% to 11% had a smaller appetite, against 1%.1 Every listed effect is in Guide 5: side effects and risks.

We found no study of taste changes on Indian generic semaglutide.

Why might foods you used to enjoy put you off?

Both medicines slow how fast the stomach empties, the US labels say, and the Wegovy label adds that semaglutide likely works by affecting appetite.1,3

A slower stomach can cause bloating, fullness and nausea, says a 2025 US nutrition advisory.5 These medicines also act on brain areas tied to appetite and nausea.5

In a 12-week trial of 30 adults, semaglutide 1 mg lowered preference for high-fat foods.6 In an 18-week trial of 55 adults, tirzepatide 15 mg lowered liking for fatty and sugary foods.7 It cut cravings for sweets, starches and fast-food fats, but not for high-fat foods in general or fruit and vegetables.7

The advisory calls these changes “less rigorously documented”, with mixed results.5 We found no study of aversions to single foods, such as eggs.

Do food aversions get better?

We found no study of how long food aversions last. On Mounjaro, most nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea came during dose increases, then decreased over time, the US label says.1

The same label says the slowing of the stomach is largest after the first dose and fades over time.1 On Wegovy, belching, indigestion and similar effects were most often reported while the dose was being raised.3 In the tirzepatide trial, the drop in food liking got smaller by week 18 but stayed below placebo.7

If a dose step is not tolerated, the US Wegovy injection label lets the prescriber delay the next one by 4 weeks.3 India’s ESI 2025 obesity guideline advises starting with low doses and raising them slowly.8

What can you eat when food puts you off?

India’s ESI 2025 guideline advises small, frequent meals, and avoiding meals high in carbohydrate, fat or fibre.8

It also says to avoid fizzy drinks and alcohol.8 For nausea, it suggests ginger candy, cloves, fennel seeds (saunf) or ice cubes. Small amounts of buttermilk or kokum juice are its non-fizzy drink options.8

When interest in food is low, the US advisory says smoothies, protein drinks, cottage cheese and soups often appeal more than red meat.5 Eating protein first in a meal makes it more likely you get enough.5 Indian protein foods are listed in Guide 8: Life on a GLP‑1.

For a bad taste in the mouth, MedlinePlus (US) suggests rinsing with baking soda, salt and warm water before eating.9 The US labels say to drink fluids, because vomiting or diarrhoea can dehydrate you and cause kidney problems.2,3

What do people on Mounjaro and similar medicines report about food aversions?

From public patient forums: 11 Reddit threads in r/Zepbound and r/Mounjaro, read in October 2026. Personal reports, not medical evidence.

What people describe

  • Matches the trials Many say greasy, fried or creamy foods now put them off. In trials, people on semaglutide or tirzepatide rated high-fat foods lower than on placebo.6,7
  • Matches the trial Many say sweets appeal less, often because they now taste too sweet. In the tirzepatide trial, liking for sugary foods and cravings for sweets fell; it didn’t test how sweet things taste.7
  • Matches the US labels Several say food itself tastes different, such as coffee losing its appeal. The US labels list taste changes, in 1.7% on Wegovy and 0.1% on Mounjaro in trials.1,3
  • Not studied Many describe aversions to protein foods they relied on, eggs most often. We found no study of aversions to eggs or other single foods.
  • Not studied Several say aversions were worst early on, after a dose increase or a day or two after the injection. Several say they eased over months; a few say theirs never fully went away. We found no study of how long aversions last.

Advice people share

  • Matches a US advisory Most replies in threads on what to eat say to drink your food: soup, broth, protein shakes and smoothies. The 2025 US nutrition advisory names soups, smoothies and protein drinks.5
  • Matches India’s ESI guideline Several eat small amounts often instead of full meals. India’s ESI 2025 guideline advises small, frequent meals.8
  • Not studied Several save rich or greasy meals for later in the week after the injection. We found no study of timing meals around the injection.
  • Matches the Wegovy label and ESI Several say not to move up a dose until side effects settle. The US Wegovy injection label lets the prescriber delay a dose step by 4 weeks, and India’s ESI guideline advises raising doses slowly.3,8

  • severe stomach pain or pressure
  • severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhoea
  • vomiting blood

These are warning signs of a medical emergency listed by the American College of Emergency Physicians, on MedlinePlus.10

Contact your doctor right away if nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea won’t go away. The US Mounjaro and Wegovy medication guides warn it can cause dehydration and kidney problems.2,3 Both guides say to stop the medicine and call your doctor right away for severe stomach pain that won’t go away. It may spread to the back.2,3 They also list upper stomach pain, fever, yellow skin or eyes, and clay-coloured stools as gallbladder signs to call about.2,3 MedlinePlus also says to call if you can’t keep any food or liquid down, or vomit 3 or more times in a day. The same goes if you haven’t passed urine for 8 hours.9
