Is “GLP 1mg” tablet a GLP-1 medicine?
No. GLP 1mg is an Indian brand of glimepiride 1 mg, a diabetes tablet from the sulfonylurea group, not a GLP-1 medicine. The US glimepiride label says it works by making the pancreas release insulin, and severe low blood sugar can happen. GLP-1 medicines such as Ozempic (semaglutide) release insulin mainly when blood sugar is high.
- GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.1
- A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.1 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.2

What is in a GLP 1mg tablet?
Each GLP 1mg tablet contains 1 mg of glimepiride, going by the ingredient line on 3 Indian pharmacy listings we checked on 5 October 2026.3
The listings name Intra Labs India as the company behind it.3 Glimepiride belongs to a group of diabetes tablets called sulfonylureas.4
The US label approves it for adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. It is not for type 1 diabetes. Your doctor sets the dose; the US label starts at 1 or 2 mg once a day, with breakfast.5
India's National List of Essential Medicines 2022 includes glimepiride 1 mg and 2 mg tablets.6 We found no GLP‑1 medicine on that list.
How is glimepiride different from a GLP-1 medicine?
Glimepiride makes the pancreas release insulin even when blood sugar is normal or low, while GLP‑1 medicines do this mainly when sugar is high.5,7,8
The US glimepiride label says it lowers sugar mainly through insulin release.5 A 2016 review says sulfonylureas do this “even at low plasma glucose levels”.7
The US Ozempic (semaglutide) label calls its insulin effect “glucose-dependent”.8 India's RSSDI-ESI guideline adds that GLP‑1 medicines reduce appetite.9
In a 14-week US label trial, 4% on glimepiride 1 mg had a possible low (hypo), judged by symptoms. It was 16% to 17% on 4 or 8 mg, and 0% on a dummy tablet.5 A 22-week trial with doses up to 8 mg found 20% on glimepiride vs 3% on the dummy.5
People in that 22-week trial gained 1.8 kg on glimepiride; the dummy group lost 0.9 kg.5 In Ozempic's 30-week trial, 2% to 4% on Ozempic alone had a low with symptoms, vs 0% on a dummy.8 The trials counted lows differently, so this is not a head-to-head result.
Among sulfonylureas, India's RSSDI-ESI guideline says glimepiride and gliclazide MR have a lower risk of lows. It prefers them for South Asian patients.9
- Stomach effects are common on GLP‑1s. Nausea in 16% to 20% on Ozempic vs 6% on a dummy injection (US label).8
- Pancreatitis (a swollen pancreas) has been seen. The Ozempic label says to stop if it is suspected.8
- Hypos are more likely when a GLP‑1 is taken with a sulfonylurea such as glimepiride, or with insulin.8
- Thyroid. Ruled out by the US label for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2; tell your doctor if this applies.8

How can you tell what a tablet really contains?
Read the generic name on the strip, which Indian rules say must be printed at least two font sizes larger than the brand name.10
On a GLP 1mg strip, that name is glimepiride.3 “GLP” here is only a brand name. GLP‑1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1 (see the full form and what a GLP‑1 is).9
The GLP‑1 medicine that does come as a tablet in India is oral semaglutide. Novo Nordisk's Rybelsus 3, 7 and 14 mg tablets are approved here for type 2 diabetes.11,12 Torrent launched India's first generic oral semaglutide on 21 March 2026.13
If both kinds are taken together, the Ozempic label warns that the risk of lows goes up. It tells doctors to consider a lower sulfonylurea dose.8 The glimepiride label says lows are likelier if you eat too little, exercise hard or long, or drink alcohol.5
