Can you drink tea and coffee on Ozempic or Mounjaro?

The short answer

Yes. We found nothing in the US or EU labels for Ozempic (semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide) that rules out tea or coffee. Semaglutide tablets (Rybelsus, and Ozempic tablets in the US) are different. Their labels say to wait at least 30 minutes after the tablet before eating or drinking. India's ICMR-NIN puts the caffeine limit at 300 mg a day.

  • GLP‑1 medicines such as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Rybelsus are prescription-only in India.1
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.1
  • The risks are in Guide 5: Side effects and risks.
  • Nothing here promises any result.

Do the Ozempic and Mounjaro labels mention tea or coffee?

We found no mention of tea, coffee or caffeine in the US or EU labels for Ozempic or Mounjaro, both weekly injections.2,3,4,5

Both US labels say the injection can be taken at any time of day, with or without meals.2,3

The UK's NHS medicine pages name alcohol, not tea or coffee.6 India's ESI 2025 obesity guideline says to avoid fizzy drinks and alcohol, but doesn't name tea or coffee. For nausea it suggests ginger candy, cloves or fennel seeds, and drinks “such as buttermilk, kokum juice, in small quantities”.7

Why do semaglutide tablets need a gap before morning chai?

Rybelsus (semaglutide tablets) is taken on an empty stomach, and its labels say to wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking.8,9

The US label says to swallow it with up to 120 mL (4 ounces) of plain water only.8 The EU label says waiting less than 30 minutes lowers how much semaglutide the body absorbs.9

The current US label covers both Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets.8 More in Is there an Ozempic tablet? The full routine is in When and how should you take Rybelsus?

Can tea or coffee worsen side effects or dehydration?

A Spanish expert panel advises avoiding coffee, tea, spices and cola for heartburn on GLP‑1 medicines, while the NHS counts tea and coffee as fluids.10,11

Reflux or heartburn is common (1 in 10 to 1 in 100) on Ozempic and Mounjaro, say their EU leaflets.4,5 For heartburn in a liraglutide patient, the 2023 panel advises “avoiding stimulant/secretory compounds (coffee, tea, spices, cola drinks)”. It lists coffee among drinks to avoid with diarrhoea.10 Its advice is expert opinion, and Novo Nordisk, Ozempic's maker, funded the work.10 Other triggers are in Foods to avoid on Mounjaro or Ozempic.

The US labels warn that vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which may lead to kidney problems.2,3 ICMR-NIN suggests about 2 litres of water a day, including beverages.12 An Indian expert consensus, supported by Abbott Nutrition, suggests over 2 litres of water or non-sugary drinks.13 Once someone is dehydrated, the NHS advises avoiding caffeinated drinks.14

What does ICMR-NIN say about caffeine and sugar in chai?

ICMR-NIN advises keeping caffeine within 300 mg a day, and added sugar to 20 to 25 g a day for adults.12

It puts 80 to 120 mg of caffeine in a 150 mL cup of brewed coffee. Instant coffee has 50 to 65 mg, and tea 30 to 65 mg.12 It also advises keeping tea and coffee at least 1 hour away from meals, because their tannin interferes with iron absorption.12

ICMR-NIN counts 1 teaspoon as 5 g.12 So 2 cups of chai with 2 teaspoons of sugar each make 20 g, all or most of the day's limit. The type 2 diabetes path covers blood sugar on these medicines.
