Which new weight-loss medicines are coming to India? Retatrutide, orforglipron, CagriSema and Zepbound

Where each new medicine stood on 5 October 2026: its trial results, its approvals, and its maker's word on India.

Written for India. Reading from the US? US versionComing soon

The short answer

As of 5 October 2026, we found none of the newest weight-loss medicines on sale in India. Orforglipron, a daily pill sold in the US as Foundayo, is closest. An Indian expert committee backed it in May 2026. Retatrutide and CagriSema are not approved anywhere. Zepbound is tirzepatide, sold in India as Mounjaro.

Before you go further
  • Approved GLP‑1 medicines are prescription-only in India. The medicines below that are not yet approved here can't be legally sold here at all.1, 2
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.1 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.3
  • Every medicine here has side effects, some serious: Guide 5: side effects and risks.
  • Trial results are averages from one trial each. They are not a promise of what any one person will lose.

Key takeaways

  • As of 5 October 2026, we found no report of orforglipron, retatrutide, CagriSema, survodutide or the Wegovy pill on sale in India.3, 4, 5
  • Orforglipron, a daily pill sold in the US as Foundayo, won an Indian expert-committee recommendation for approval on 20 May 2026.3
  • Retatrutide cut weight by 25.0% over 80 weeks on its 12 mg dose in TRIUMPH-1, against 3.9% on a dummy, but 11.3% stopped for side effects (4.9% on dummy).6
  • CagriSema and retatrutide are not approved anywhere, though Novo Nordisk filed CagriSema in the US in December 2025 and Lilly plans a retatrutide filing in early 2027.7, 8, 9
  • Zepbound is Lilly's brand of tirzepatide for weight in the US and Japan; in India the same medicine has been sold as Mounjaro since March 2025.10, 31, 11

Which new medicines are approved somewhere, and which are still in trials?

Two are approved abroad: orforglipron and the Wegovy pill. Retatrutide, CagriSema, survodutide and amycretin are still unapproved everywhere, as far as we found.

The table sorts them by how far each has got. "India" means what we could find in CDSCO committee minutes, trial registries and news, checked on 5 October 2026.3, 12

Status checked 5 October 2026 from the makers' releases, CDSCO committee minutes, ClinicalTrials.gov and the WHO trial registry. "We found no" means we looked and did not find one.

Trial numbers below come from different trials, with different people and lengths. They can't be lined up to rank the medicines. None of these trials compared these medicines with each other; one compared CagriSema with Zepbound's medicine (below).22, 6, 23, 32

How close is orforglipron (Foundayo) to India?

Closer than any other new medicine: an Indian expert committee recommended approving it on 20 May 2026. We found no launch by 5 October.

Orforglipron is a daily pill that switches on the body's GLP‑1 receptor. The US label says it lowers appetite and slows how fast the stomach empties.24 The wider picture is in what GLP‑1 medicines do. It can be taken at any time of day, with no food or water rules.13 The US approved it for weight on 1 April 2026, as Foundayo.13

What the main trial found

ATTAIN‑1 gave 3,127 adults without diabetes orforglipron or a dummy pill (placebo) for 72 weeks.22 On the top trial dose, 36 mg, average weight fell 11.2%, against 2.1% on placebo.22 For a 90 kg person, 11.2% is about 10 kg. That is a trial average, not a promise.

The trials used an earlier, test form of the pill. The US label shows each trial dose as its matching sold tablet. The 36 mg trial dose appears as the 17.2 mg tablet.24, 22

Side effects were mostly in the stomach. Between 5.3% and 10.3% stopped because of side effects, against 2.7% on placebo.22 The US label pools ATTAIN‑1 with a second trial that included people with diabetes, and uses the sold tablet strengths.24 At the top 17.2 mg tablet, 35% felt sick (nausea) against 10% on placebo, and 24% vomited against 4%.24

Where it stands in India

India was one of 10 countries and territories in ATTAIN‑1, with 8 Indian sites (CTRI/2023/12/060509).13, 25

On 20 May 2026, CDSCO's endocrinology expert committee backed its import and sale. That covers tablets from 0.8 mg to 17.2 mg, the same strengths as the US label.3, 24 It set two conditions. Shops may sell it only on an endocrinologist's or internal-medicine specialist's prescription. Lilly must also run a further trial after approval (a Phase IV trial).3 The minutes record a recommendation; the permission itself is a separate, later step.3

Lilly said on 1 April 2026 that it "plans to launch in each country shortly after approval".13 In September 2025, Reuters reported that Lilly plans to launch it in India. Lilly India's president, Winselow Tucker, gave no launch timeline.26

The UK approved it in August 2026.14 The EU was still reviewing it in September 2026, with "outstanding issues" listed.30 We found no EU approval by 5 October 2026.

What did retatrutide's trials find, and when could it arrive?

Retatrutide is still in trials and not approved anywhere. Lilly plans to file it in the US in early 2027 and has named no Indian date.

Retatrutide is a weekly injection. One molecule acts on three hormone receptors: GIP, GLP‑1 and glucagon.9 Lilly says it is legally available only through its clinical trials.9 The basics are in our Answer: What is the retatrutide injection, and is it available in India?

What TRIUMPH-1 found

TRIUMPH‑1 followed 2,339 adults with obesity or overweight, without diabetes, for 80 weeks.6 Counting everyone who started, people on the 12 mg dose lost 25.0% of their weight, against 3.9% on placebo.6 If everyone had stayed on treatment, it would have been 28.3% against 2.2%.6 For a 90 kg person, 25.0% is about 22 kg, as a trial average.

The harms rose with the dose.6 On 12 mg, 42.4% had nausea (14.8% on placebo) and 25.3% vomited (4.8%).6 Unusual skin sensations such as tingling (dysesthesia) hit 12.5%, against 0.9%.6 And 11.3% stopped because of side effects, against 4.9%.6

When, and is India in the trials?

On 29 September 2026, Lilly said it plans to file with the US FDA in early 2027 (January to March).8 That release named no filing outside the US, and Lilly has given no price.8, 9

The trials include Indian sites. TRIUMPH‑1 is registered here as CTRI/2023/11/059873, with 14 Indian sites. Three more Lilly trials that include retatrutide list Indian sites too.4

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are the most common. In three of these trials, 74% to 90% had stomach side effects on the medicine. On placebo, it was 40% to 48%.27, 23, 18
  • Pancreatitis. Severe stomach pain that may spread to the back is the warning sign on the US Foundayo label.24
  • Gallbladder problems. In the Foundayo label's trials, gallstones affected 1% on orforglipron, against 0.7% on placebo.24
  • Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea can injure the kidneys.24
  • Thyroid warning. Ruled out by the US labels for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or MEN 2; tell your doctor if this applies.24, 10 Not in pregnancy: the Foundayo label says it may harm an unborn baby.24

Where does CagriSema stand?

CagriSema is waiting for a US decision after Novo Nordisk filed it in December 2025. It is not approved anywhere, and India is still at the trial stage.

CagriSema is one weekly injection with two medicines in it. It pairs semaglutide 2.4 mg (the medicine in Wegovy) with cagrilintide 2.4 mg, a long-acting copy of the hormone amylin.7

In REDEFINE 1, 3,417 adults without diabetes were treated for 68 weeks.23 Average weight fell 20.4% on CagriSema, against 3.0% on placebo.23 Stomach side effects affected 79.6%, against 39.9% on placebo. They were mostly mild to moderate and passed.23

REDEFINE 4 then tested CagriSema (2.4 mg of each) against tirzepatide 15 mg, the top dose of Zepbound and Mounjaro. It ran 84 weeks in 809 adults, and everyone knew which medicine they took (open-label).32 Counting everyone who started, weight fell 20.2% on CagriSema and 23.6% on tirzepatide.32 If everyone had stayed on treatment, it would have been 23.0% against 25.5%.32

So the trial missed its main goal, which was to show CagriSema was no worse than tirzepatide.32 Novo reported this on 23 February 2026. It said stomach side effects were the most common on CagriSema, mostly mild to moderate.32

Novo Nordisk filed it with the US FDA on 18 December 2025.7 We found no FDA decision by 5 October 2026, and no EU approval.

India has trial sites: 20 in the diabetes trial, REDEFINE 2, and 78 in the heart trial, REDEFINE 3. The heart trial is still running.17 On 23 March 2026, CDSCO's committee reviewed two new CagriSema trial plans. It asked Novo for more data first, including dose reasons for children and teenagers.12 We found no Novo statement on an Indian launch of CagriSema.

Is the Wegovy pill coming to India?

Novo Nordisk says it intends to bring oral semaglutide for weight to India "on priority", subject to approval. We found no Indian approval by 5 October 2026.

The Wegovy pill is semaglutide 25 mg, taken once a day. The US approved it on 22 December 2025.15 The European Commission approved it on 15 July 2026, after the US, UK, UAE and Bahrain.16

In OASIS 4, 307 adults took it for 64 weeks. Average weight fell 13.6%, against 2.2% on placebo.27 Stomach side effects affected 74.0%, against 42.2%.27 Novo reports 6.9% stopped because of side effects, against 5.9%.16

India already has oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes, as Rybelsus.5 Its doses are lower; see Is there an Ozempic tablet? A diabetes trial of 25 mg and 50 mg tablets was registered in India as CTRI/2021/02/031561.28

Novo Nordisk India's managing director, Vikrant Shrotriya, spoke in February 2026. "It would be our intention to bring those molecules to India on priority, subject to regulatory approvals," he said.5 He gave no date. In July 2026, Novo said it would launch the pill "in more countries in the second half of 2026". It named none.16

What about survodutide and amycretin, further back?

Survodutide and amycretin are both in phase 3 trials with Indian sites, and neither is approved anywhere as far as we found. Results so far come with frequent stomach side effects.

Survodutide (Boehringer Ingelheim)

Survodutide is a weekly injection acting on two receptors, glucagon and GLP‑1.18 In SYNCHRONIZE‑1, 725 adults without diabetes were treated for 76 weeks.18 On 6.0 mg, weight fell 13.0%, against 5.4% on placebo.18 Stomach side effects hit 89.7%, against 47.9%.18

A second trial, SYNCHRONIZE‑2, treated 755 adults with type 2 diabetes for 76 weeks. At its better dose, weight fell by up to 13.1% if everyone had stayed on treatment, against 3.1% on placebo.33 But 18% of everyone on survodutide stopped because of stomach side effects, against 1.2% on placebo.33

SYNCHRONIZE‑1 had no Indian sites, but four other phase 3 survodutide trials list them, including heart, diabetes and liver trials.19

Amycretin, now zenagamtide (Novo Nordisk)

Amycretin has a new official name, zenagamtide. It is one molecule acting on GLP‑1 and amylin receptors.20 In a 36-week phase 2 trial, 186 adults with type 2 diabetes took it as a daily pill. On 50 mg, HbA1c (average blood sugar) fell 1.4 points, 1.1 more than placebo.20 Stomach side effects hit 47%, against 23% on placebo.20

Two phase 3 trials of the weekly injection list 21 Indian sites each. One, in Asian adults with excess weight, plans to start in January 2027.21

Is Zepbound available in India?

Not under that name. Zepbound is Lilly's tirzepatide, sold in India as Mounjaro since March 2025 and, through Cipla, as Yurpeak.10, 11, 29

The full answer, with the US and Japanese approvals, is in Is Zepbound available in India?

What if someone offers you one of these now?

Treat it with suspicion. Retatrutide and CagriSema can't be legally sold in India, and we found no approved orforglipron on sale here yet.

Lilly says no one should take anything claiming to be retatrutide outside its trials.9 It warns such products may hold "unknown ingredients", the wrong dose, or the wrong medicine.9 India's 2019 drug rules bar importing or making any new drug for sale except under those rules.2

The government said on 1 April 2026 that CDSCO had stepped up checks on unauthorised GLP‑1 sales.1 How to spot a fake pen is in Fake GLP‑1 pens in India. The approved brands are in Guide 6.

Questions people ask

Is retatrutide available in India?

No. Retatrutide is not approved in India or anywhere else. Lilly says it is legally available only through its clinical trials. Lilly plans a US filing in early 2027 and has given no Indian date.9, 8

When will orforglipron (Foundayo) launch in India?

Lilly has not given a date. An Indian expert committee recommended approval on 20 May 2026. Lilly says it plans to launch in each country shortly after approval. We found no Indian launch by 5 October 2026.3, 13

Is Zepbound the same as Mounjaro?

Yes, the same medicine. Both contain tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly. Zepbound is the brand for weight in the US and Japan; in India tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro and, through Cipla, as Yurpeak.10, 31, 11, 29

Is the Wegovy pill available in India?

Not as far as we found on 5 October 2026. It is approved in the US, UK, EU, UAE and Bahrain. Novo Nordisk India says it intends to bring oral semaglutide here on priority, subject to approval. Rybelsus, oral semaglutide for diabetes, is already sold here.16, 5

How we researched this

On 5 October 2026 we read each maker's releases and the trial papers (NEJM, The Lancet). We also read the US Foundayo and Zepbound labels (US, not Indian) and two sets of CDSCO committee minutes. We counted Indian trial sites on ClinicalTrials.gov and took CTRI numbers from the WHO trial registry. We give no launch dates or prices beyond what makers have said. "We found no" means we looked and did not find one.

Before you move on

  • Orforglipron is the closest to India: an expert committee recommended it on 20 May 2026, but we found no launch.
  • Retatrutide and CagriSema are not approved anywhere; India has only their trials.
  • Every one of them caused stomach side effects in most people in its trials.
