Is Zepbound available in India?

The short answer

No. Zepbound is Eli Lilly's brand of tirzepatide for weight in the US and Japan, and we found no Indian launch. India sells the same medicine as Mounjaro, approved here for type 2 diabetes and weight management, and as Cipla's Yurpeak. On 5 October 2026, the 2.5 mg Mounjaro KwikPen's printed MRP was ₹13,125.

  • GLP‑1 medicines, tirzepatide included, are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.13
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.13 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.6

What is Zepbound?

Zepbound is Eli Lilly's brand of tirzepatide for weight in the US and Japan, first approved by the US regulator (FDA) on 8 November 2023.2

The US label covers long-term weight loss in adults with obesity, or overweight plus at least 1 weight-related condition. It also covers moderate to severe sleep apnoea (obstructive sleep apnoea) in adults with obesity.1 Japan approved it for obesity with related health problems on 27 December 2024, and it went on sale there on 11 April 2025.16,17 In the US, Lilly's other tirzepatide brand, Mounjaro, is labelled for type 2 diabetes.3 The Zepbound label says not to combine it with other tirzepatide products.1

How is tirzepatide sold in India?

In India, Lilly sells tirzepatide as Mounjaro, launched on 20 March 2025 and approved here for both type 2 diabetes and weight management.

A CDSCO expert committee first recommended tirzepatide in April 2023.6 In June 2024 it recommended the weight use too, if Lilly runs a follow-up (Phase IV) trial.7 Lilly launched Mounjaro after CDSCO's approval.4,5 Its weight use covers adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition.5 India defines obesity lower, from a BMI of 25.15 Those numbers come from the approval, and a doctor decides what they mean for you.

Cipla has sold a second brand, Yurpeak, since 10 December 2025. Lilly makes it, and Cipla says the price matches Mounjaro.8 How the two medicines compare is in Mounjaro vs Ozempic.

What does tirzepatide cost in India?

On 5 October 2026, Mounjaro KwikPens had printed MRPs from ₹13,125 (2.5 mg) to ₹25,781 (12.5 mg and 15 mg), for 4 weekly doses.10

Lilly launched the pens at ₹14,000 to ₹27,500 for a month's supply.9 GST on most medicines fell from 12% to 5% on 22 September 2025.11 The drug-price regulator (NPPA) told makers to revise MRPs from that date.12 Today's MRPs equal the launch prices with the lower tax worked in. That is our arithmetic; we found no Lilly statement.

We count a year as 52 weekly doses. At 5 mg (₹16,406 a pen), that is 13 pens, about ₹2.13 lakh.10 Which strength applies is a doctor's call; Mounjaro doses explained covers the steps. Every strength is in What is the MRP of Mounjaro in India?.

Can you import Zepbound for personal use?

India's drug rules let a traveller bring in up to 100 average doses of a medicine for their own use; posted imports need a permit.

Rule 36 of the Drugs Rules, 1945 (made under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act) says the medicine must be in your bona fide baggage. It must be declared to Customs if they ask.14 Posted or couriered medicine needs a permit, applied for on Form 12A with a prescription and issued on Form 12B.14

A Zepbound single-dose pen is stored at 2–8°C and may spend at most 21 days out of the fridge, at no more than 30°C. The US KwikPen allows up to 30 days at up to 30°C.1 That is hard to check for a pen that came by post. Pens from unknown sellers can also be fake; see fake GLP-1 pens in India. RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects. In the US Zepbound label's weight trials, 25% to 29% on 5 mg to 15 mg felt sick (nausea). On a dummy injection, 8% did.1
  • A swollen pancreas (pancreatitis) and gallbladder disease are label warnings.1
  • Kidneys. Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea can harm the kidneys (acute kidney injury), a US Zepbound label warning.1
  • Thyroid C-cell tumour warning. The US label rules it out with a personal or family history of a rare thyroid cancer (MTC) or MEN 2; tell your doctor if this applies.1
  • Pregnancy and the pill. It may harm an unborn baby, and the label says to stop once pregnancy is known. It can make the contraceptive pill less reliable for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose rise.1
