Can I get Ozempic over the counter?

The short answer

No. Ozempic (semaglutide) is a prescription medicine in the US, so you need a prescription from a licensed clinician and a licensed pharmacy to fill it. Wegovy, Zepbound and the Foundayo pill are prescription-only too. The FDA warns that GLP-1 products sold without a prescription, or labeled for research, can be illegal or fake.

Why do you need a prescription for Ozempic?

Ozempic’s US Medication Guide calls it “an injectable prescription medicine” for adults with type 2 diabetes.1

The other GLP‑1 brands are the same. Wegovy, Zepbound and Foundayo are each described as a “prescription medicine” in their Medication Guides.2,3,4

A prescriber checks things a store can’t, such as a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, which rules Ozempic out.1 The FDA’s advice is to “obtain a prescription from their doctor and fill the prescription at a state-licensed pharmacy.”5

What about GLP-1 products sold without a prescription?

The FDA says some sellers illegally offer unapproved semaglutide, tirzepatide and other GLP‑1s “falsely labeled ‘for research purposes’ or ‘not for human consumption’.”5

It also warns that counterfeit drugs “could contain the wrong ingredients, contain too little, too much or no active ingredient at all.”5 Fake Ozempic pens have been found in the US supply chain, most recently in December 2025.6 See Counterfeit Ozempic in the US for how to spot one.

An online pharmacy that “does not require a doctor’s prescription” is one of the FDA’s warning signs.7 See Can I get Ozempic online legally?

What are the legal ways to get it?

See a licensed clinician, in person or by telehealth, who decides whether a GLP‑1 suits you and which one.

If you get a prescription, insurance, the makers’ self-pay prices and the government’s TrumpRx.gov listing are the main ways to pay: see What is TrumpRx? and How much is Wegovy without insurance?

Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes; for weight, Wegovy is the semaglutide brand with that approval.1,2 How a visit and prescription work is in Guide 6.
