How much does bariatric surgery cost in India?

The short answer

About ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh, going by the prices 8 private hospitals in India publish online (checked 5 Oct 2026). Seven list a sleeve gastrectomy at ₹2–5.5 lakh, and six list a gastric bypass at ₹2–6 lakh. Most give a range, not a fixed package, and complications or a longer stay can cost extra.

How much do a sleeve and a bypass cost?

Seven private hospitals list a sleeve gastrectomy at ₹2–5.5 lakh, and six list a gastric bypass at ₹2–6 lakh, on their websites.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

A sleeve removes about 80% of the stomach. A bypass makes a small stomach pouch and joins it to the lower small intestine.15 Both are done as keyhole (laparoscopic) operations.15

Why do the prices vary so much?

Your city, the type of operation, your room and your own health all change the bill, and hospitals include different things in a price.

CARE Hospitals lists a bypass at ₹2.5–4 lakh in Raipur and Nagpur, but ₹3–6 lakh in Hyderabad.2 At Jammu Hospital, robotic surgery adds about ₹1 lakh.3 Yashoda lists room type, theatre charges, ICU care and the surgical team as cost factors.8

Of the 8 hospitals, only Jammu Hospital spells out what its price covers.3 It includes the team, anaesthesia, theatre, a standard stay, routine tests, medicines during the stay and routine follow-up.3 Complications, an ICU or longer stay, and extra tests or medicines cost extra.3 Diabetes, sleep apnoea or heart disease can mean more tests before surgery.3

Costs carry on afterwards. In the UK, the NHS asks for follow-up for life, vitamin and mineral supplements, and blood tests.14

For comparison, a first year of Wegovy (semaglutide) on the US label's dose steps costs ₹1,83,210 in medicine at MRP.16

Does health insurance pay for bariatric surgery?

It can, but two policies we checked still use older regulator wording that excludes obesity surgery unless strict conditions are all met.12

The insurance regulator, IRDAI, set this wording (code Excl06) in 2019,9 and its 2020 master circular repeated it.10 Surgery is excluded unless a doctor advises it, it follows clinical protocols and you are 18 or older.10 Your BMI must be 40 or more. Or it must be 35 or more, after milder methods failed, with one of 4 conditions.10 These are obesity-related heart muscle disease, coronary heart disease, severe sleep apnoea or uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.10

IRDAI's May 2024 master circular replaced the 2020 circular, and we found no standard obesity exclusion in it.11 Even so, HDFC ERGO and Bajaj policy wordings still print the exclusion (checked 5 Oct 2026).12 Its BMI bar is higher than the Asian surgeons' guideline, which considers surgery from a BMI of 35, or 30 with uncontrolled diabetes.13
