Is Mounjaro available in India?
Yes. Eli Lilly launched Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in India on 20 March 2025. It is approved for type 2 diabetes and for weight management in some adults. It is prescription-only, sold as a weekly vial or a monthly KwikPen. Cipla sells Lilly's tirzepatide as a second brand, Yurpeak. On 5 October 2026 the 2.5 mg KwikPen's printed MRP was ₹13,125.
- GLP‑1 medicines, Mounjaro included, are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.9
- A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.9 For tirzepatide, CDSCO expert-committee minutes from April 2023 set a similar condition: sold on the prescription of an endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist. We found no rule covering every brand.13

When did Mounjaro launch in India?
Eli Lilly launched Mounjaro in India on 20 March 2025, as single-dose vials of 2.5 mg and 5 mg.
The regulator is the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). A CDSCO expert committee first recommended tirzepatide in April 2023.13 In June 2024 it recommended adding weight management. Its condition: Lilly runs a Phase IV trial.11 Lilly launched the vials after CDSCO gave its marketing approval.1,2 CDSCO then cleared a pen version, the KwikPen, in June 2025.3 Lilly launched the pen in August 2025, in 6 strengths from 2.5 mg to 15 mg.3
What is Mounjaro approved for in India?
Lilly says Mounjaro is approved in India for 2 uses: type 2 diabetes, and long-term weight management in some adults.
For diabetes, it is used with diet and exercise to control blood sugar.2 For weight, it is used with a lower-calorie diet and more activity. That covers adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least 1 weight-related condition.2 We found no public Indian label, so these come from Lilly's launch statement.
Those BMI numbers belong to the medicine's approval. India's own definition of obesity starts lower, at a BMI of 25.10 Guide 1 explains the Indian cut-offs. Meeting a number does not settle anything; a doctor decides.
What is the difference between the Mounjaro vial and the KwikPen?
A Mounjaro vial in India holds 1 weekly dose; a KwikPen holds 4, so 1 pen lasts about a month.
The vials in India are single-dose, and Lilly launched them in 2.5 mg and 5 mg only.2,3 The KwikPen comes in 6 strengths, and its price covers a one-month supply.3 The US label says each KwikPen contains 4 doses.5
What is Yurpeak?
Yurpeak is Lilly's tirzepatide, sold by Cipla since 10 December 2025 at the same price as Mounjaro.
Cipla calls it the second brand of Lilly's tirzepatide in India, and Lilly makes it. It has the same 2 approved uses, comes as a KwikPen in 6 strengths, and needs a prescription.4
What does Mounjaro cost in India?
On 5 October 2026, the 2.5 mg Mounjaro KwikPen had a printed MRP of ₹13,125 for 4 weekly doses.
Printed MRPs run from ₹13,125 (2.5 mg) to ₹25,781 (12.5 mg and 15 mg) per pen.7,8 At launch, the KwikPen cost ₹14,000 a month for 2.5 mg, rising to ₹27,500 for 12.5 mg and 15 mg.3 The vials launched at ₹3,500 (2.5 mg) and ₹4,375 (5 mg).1
GST on most medicines fell from 12% to 5% on 22 September 2025.6 The national drug-price regulator (NPPA) told makers to revise MRPs from that date.12 The new MRPs are the launch MRPs with the lower tax worked in (× 105/112). That is our arithmetic; we found no Lilly statement. A year at 5 mg is 13 pens, about ₹2.13 lakh. Every strength will be in What is the MRP of Mounjaro in India?.
