Is there a generic Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in India?

The short answer

No. As of 5 October 2026, we found no approved generic Mounjaro (tirzepatide) in India. CDSCO expert-committee minutes since 2024 list tirzepatide only from Eli Lilly. The main tirzepatide patent is granted in India; the Medicines Patent Pool expects it to expire in 2036 across lower- and middle-income countries. Yurpeak, sold by Cipla, is Lilly's own brand, not a generic.

  • GLP‑1 medicines, tirzepatide included, are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.16
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.16 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.17

How did we check for a generic tirzepatide in India?

We read 73 sets of CDSCO expert-committee minutes, from January 2024 to September 2026, and every tirzepatide item came from Eli Lilly.1

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), India's drug regulator, has an expert committee on diabetes and hormones that publishes minutes after each meeting.1 The latest tirzepatide item, in June 2026, was Lilly asking to update its prescribing information.2 The same minutes list Indian firms' semaglutide applications, such as Natco's in December 2024.3

CDSCO's yearly lists of new drugs show tirzepatide once, for Lilly's first approval on 19 January 2024.4 Those lists leave out the semaglutide generics too, so they can't settle this alone.4 Semaglutide generics launched on 21 March 2026, when its main Indian patent ran out.5 News searches on 5 Oct 2026 found no tirzepatide launch.20 The full story is in what changed when semaglutide's patent expired.

When does the tirzepatide patent expire in India?

The main tirzepatide patent is granted in India; the Medicines Patent Pool expects it to expire in 2036 across lower- and middle-income countries.6

Across lower- and middle-income countries, the Medicines Patent Pool expects patents on the injection's formulation to run to 2039.6 The Patent Opposition Database, run by ITPC, Third World Network and Médecins Sans Frontières, lists Lilly's Indian molecule patent, IN379443, as granted.7 Two formulation patents were challenged before grant, in 2023 and 2024.7 One challenge was refused, and the challenger missed the other hearing.7 Both patents were granted on 27 March 2025.7

On 5 Oct 2026 we found no Indian court case or compulsory licence over tirzepatide's patents.20

Is Yurpeak a generic Mounjaro?

No. Yurpeak is Lilly's own tirzepatide, made by Lilly and sold by Cipla since 10 December 2025 at Mounjaro's price.8

Mounjaro KwikPens carry printed MRPs from ₹13,125 (2.5 mg) to ₹25,781 (12.5 mg and 15 mg).9 They launched at ₹14,000 to ₹27,500 a month in August 2025.10

What about “generic tirzepatide” sold online in India?

We found no Indian approval for any tirzepatide except Lilly's, including anything sold online as “generic tirzepatide”.1,4

On 5 Oct 2026, an Indian trade marketplace listed a “Tirzepatide Injection Mounjaro Zepbound Generic” vial, marked “Prescription: No”.11 Its brand, Tirzep by ACI, matches a tirzepatide sold in Bangladesh.12 Under India's 2019 drug rules, most drugs stay “new drugs” for 4 years after first approval.13 No one may import or make a new drug for sale except under those rules.13

The US regulator, the FDA, warns about illegal GLP‑1 products sold online.14 They can hold too little, too much or none of the medicine.14 In April 2026, officials in Gurugram seized fake Mounjaro pens worth over ₹70 lakh.15 See how to check a Mounjaro pen.
