Is Ozempic available in India?

The short answer

Yes. Novo Nordisk launched Ozempic (semaglutide) in India in December 2025 for type 2 diabetes. It is a prescription-only weekly pen in 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg strengths. Since 1 April 2026, the 0.25 mg starting dose has an MRP of ₹5,660 for 4 weekly doses. For weight management, Novo sells semaglutide in India as Wegovy.

Before you go further
  • GLP‑1 medicines such as Ozempic are prescription-only in India, not sold over the counter.11
  • A government statement on 1 Apr 2026 said only endocrinologists, internal-medicine specialists and cardiologists can prescribe them.11 CDSCO expert-committee minutes attach a similar condition to some approvals (endocrinologist or internal-medicine specialist), but we found no rule covering every brand.14,15

  • Nothing here promises any result, and no brand here is a recommendation.

When did Ozempic launch in India, and what is it for?

Novo Nordisk launched Ozempic (semaglutide) in India in December 2025, as a once-weekly injection for type 2 diabetes.1

Business Standard reported the launch on 12 December 2025, at ₹2,200 a week for the lowest dose.1 In India, Ozempic is sold for diabetes, and Wegovy is the brand prescribed for obesity and weight management.2 On 27 February 2026, Abbott said it would sell Novo's semaglutide for diabetes as a second brand, Extensior.4 If diabetes is why you're reading, the type 2 diabetes path covers HbA1c and other diabetes medicines.

Is Ozempic the same medicine as Wegovy?

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain Novo Nordisk's semaglutide, but India sells them for different uses and doses.2,5

Wegovy launched in India on 24 June 2025 for long-term weight management, with a top weekly dose of 2.4 mg.5 Ozempic stops at 1 mg in India.2 Since 1 April 2026, the 0.25 mg starting dose of both costs the same.3 Guide 6 lists which medicines are approved in India, and for what.

Which Ozempic doses are sold, and what is the MRP?

Ozempic comes as a prefilled pen in 3 strengths, at an MRP of ₹5,660 to ₹9,100 for 4 weekly doses.2,3

Novo cut the price of the starting dose by 36% from 1 April 2026, to ₹1,415 a week including taxes.3 Before the cut, the 3 strengths cost ₹8,800 to ₹11,175 for 4 weekly doses.2 The US label starts everyone on 0.25 mg for 4 weeks, and a doctor raises the dose from there.8 That label also has a 2 mg dose, which India's 3 strengths don't include.2,8

Are there generic versions of Ozempic in India?

Yes. Other companies have sold generic semaglutide under their own brand names since the patent expired on 20 March 2026.2,9

Natco launched on 20 March, and Dr Reddy's, Zydus, Alkem, Sun Pharma and Glenmark also launched that month.9,10 By 31 March, at least 17 generic versions were on sale, as pens, vials and tablets.2 Launch prices ran from ₹1,290 to ₹4,200 for 4 starting doses.9,12 For 4 top doses in pens, makers published ₹4,200 to ₹8,000.12,13 Vials are priced differently: Natco's top-strength vial launched at about ₹1,750 a month.9 Some generics are approved for weight management as well as diabetes.10

Novo announced its own price cuts at the end of March, effective 1 April, 12 days after the patent expired.2,3 Guide 6 explains brand versus generic. A post on what changed when the patent expired goes deeper.

RisksThe risks, in brief
  • Stomach effects are common. Feeling sick (nausea) hit 16% on 0.5 mg and 20% on 1 mg. On a dummy injection it was 6% (US label).8
  • Pancreatitis (a swollen pancreas) and gallbladder problems have been reported.8
  • Dehydration from vomiting or diarrhoea can harm the kidneys.8
  • Hypos (low blood sugar) are more likely with insulin or a sulfonylurea.8
  • Thyroid tumours in rodents. The US label carries a boxed warning: semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumours in rodents. Whether it does in humans is unknown.8
  • The US label rules it out for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2; tell your doctor if this applies. It also says to stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.8
