Why does food taste different on Zepbound or Wegovy, and what can I eat?

The short answer

Semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound) slow the stomach and likely work through appetite, say the US labels. Both list taste changes as a side effect, in 1.7% on Wegovy vs 0.5% on placebo and 0.4% on Zepbound vs none. In small trials, people liked fatty foods less. A US nutrition advisory suggests small, frequent meals, soups and smoothies.

Why does food taste or feel different on Zepbound or Wegovy?

Both medicines slow how fast the stomach empties and likely work through appetite, the US labels say, and both list taste changes (dysgeusia).1,2

On Wegovy (semaglutide), 1.7% of people in the weight trials reported taste changes, against 0.5% on placebo (a dummy injection).2 On Zepbound (tirzepatide), it was 0.4%, against none on placebo.1 The Mounjaro and Ozempic labels, the same medicines for diabetes, list it too.3,4

Belching is more common. It affected 4% to 5% on Zepbound vs 1% on placebo, and 7% on Wegovy vs under 1%.1,2 Indigestion affected 9% to 10% on Zepbound and 9% on Wegovy, vs 3% to 4% on placebo.1,2 A slower stomach can cause bloating, fullness and nausea, says a 2025 US nutrition advisory.5 These medicines also act on brain areas tied to appetite and nausea.5 Other side effects are in Guide 5.

Why do some foods put me off completely?

Small trials found that people on semaglutide or tirzepatide liked fatty foods less than on placebo, and on tirzepatide many other foods too.6,7

In a 12-week trial of 30 adults, semaglutide 1 mg lowered preference for high-fat foods.6 An 18-week trial gave 55 adults on a low-calorie diet tirzepatide 15 mg or placebo.7 Tirzepatide lowered liking for fatty, sugary and high-protein foods.7 Taste tests disagree. A 16-week trial in 30 women found semaglutide sharpened taste recognition.8 A US study found 46 people on GLP‑1s scored lower on all 5 basic tastes than matched non-users.11

The US advisory says food preference changes are “less rigorously documented”, with mixed results.5 It sees an overall shift away from sweet, savory, starchy and high-fat foods.5 We found no study of aversions to single foods, such as eggs.

Does it get better?

Stomach side effects were most common while the dose was being raised, and on Zepbound they eased over time, the US labels say.1,2

The Zepbound label says the stomach slowing is largest after the first dose and fades over time.1 In the tirzepatide trial, the drop in food liking got smaller over 18 weeks but stayed below placebo.7 If a dose isn’t tolerated while it’s being raised, the Wegovy injection label lets the prescriber delay the next step by 4 weeks.2 The Zepbound label suggests a lower maintenance dose.1

What can I eat when food puts me off?

When hunger and interest in food are low, the US advisory suggests small, frequent meals, with smoothies, protein drinks, cottage cheese and soups.5

These often appeal more than red meat, cold cuts or hard cheese.5 Eating protein first in a meal makes it more likely you get enough.5 Fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts and nut butters pack protein into small amounts.5 See Guide 8 for protein.

For nausea from any cause, MedlinePlus suggests 6 to 8 small, bland meals a day.9 Examples are crackers, toast, baked chicken or fish, potatoes, noodles and rice.9 It suggests avoiding greasy, fried or strong-smelling foods, and caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks.9 Rinsing with baking soda, salt and warm water before eating can help a bad taste in the mouth.9 Both labels say to drink fluids, and warn that fluid loss from vomiting or diarrhea can cause kidney problems.1,2

What do people on Zepbound report about food aversions?

From public patient forums: 11 Reddit threads in r/Zepbound and r/Mounjaro, read in October 2026. Personal reports, not medical evidence.

What people describe

  • Matches the trials Many say greasy, fried or creamy foods now put them off. In trials, people on semaglutide or tirzepatide rated high-fat foods lower than on placebo.6,7
  • Matches the trial Many say sweets and soda appeal less, often because they now taste too sweet. In the tirzepatide trial, liking for sugary foods and cravings for sweets fell; it didn’t test how sweet things taste.7
  • Matches the label Several say food itself tastes different, such as coffee tasting off or processed food tasting like chemicals. Both labels list taste changes, in under 2 in 100 trial participants.1,2
  • Not studied Many describe aversions to protein foods they relied on, eggs most often. We found no study of aversions to eggs or other single foods.
  • Not studied Several say aversions were worst early on, after a dose increase or a day or two after the shot. Several say they eased over months; a few still have them after a year or more. We found no study of how long aversions last.

Advice people share

  • Matches the US advisory Most replies in threads on what to eat say to drink your food: soup, broth, protein shakes and smoothies. The US advisory names soups, smoothies and protein drinks.5
  • Matches MedlinePlus Many eat small amounts often, choosing plain foods such as crackers, toast, rice or potatoes. MedlinePlus suggests small, bland meals for nausea.9
  • Not studied Several save rich or greasy meals for later in the week after the shot. We found no study of timing meals around the shot.
  • Matches the label Several say not to move up a dose until side effects settle, and to ask the prescriber about a lower dose. Both labels leave that to the prescriber. Options are a 4-week delay on Wegovy injection, or a lower dose on Zepbound.1,2
Get help now: call 911 or go to the emergency room for severe belly pain or pressure, severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or vomiting blood.10

Contact your prescriber or a doctor right away if nausea, vomiting or diarrhea won’t go away. Both labels warn it can cause dehydration and kidney problems.1,2 Both Medication Guides say to stop the medicine and call your provider right away for severe stomach pain that won’t go away, sometimes felt through to the back, a possible sign of pancreatitis.1,2 They also list upper belly pain, fever, yellow skin or eyes, and clay-colored stools as possible gallbladder signs to call about.1,2 MedlinePlus also says to call if you can’t keep any food or liquid down, or vomit 3 or more times in a day.9 The same goes if you haven’t urinated for 8 hours.9
