How do you take the Wegovy pill?
Take one Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) each morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water, and swallow it whole. Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines by mouth, the US label says. The dose starts at 1.5 mg and rises every 30 days to 25 mg from day 91.

What are the label’s rules for taking the Wegovy pill?
The US label says to take one tablet each morning on an empty stomach, with no more than 4 ounces of water and nothing else.1
Swallow it whole. Then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink or take other medicines by mouth. Never take more than one tablet a day.1
The tablet contains SNAC (salcaprozate sodium), which helps semaglutide get absorbed, mostly in the stomach. Even so, only about 1 to 2% of the dose reaches the blood.1 In studies in healthy people, more was absorbed with about 2 ounces of water than with 8 ounces. A longer wait before eating raised it too.1
If you miss a dose, the label says to skip it and take the next one the following day. Keep the tablets in their original closed bottle at 68 to 77°F, away from moisture.1
When does the Wegovy pill start working?
The US label gives no day when the effects begin. Each tablet peaks in your blood about 1 hour after you take it, and the 25 mg maintenance dose starts only on day 91.1
The label’s ladder is 1.5 mg for days 1 to 30, 4 mg for days 31 to 60 and 9 mg for days 61 to 90. From day 91 the dose is 25 mg, which the label calls the maintenance dose. The steps are there “to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions.” If a step isn’t tolerated, the label says to consider delaying it.1
The label’s weight results come at week 64. In that trial of 307 adults, the 25 mg group lost 13.6% of body weight on average. The placebo (dummy pill) group lost 2.4%. 76 in 100 lost at least 5% of their weight, against 31 in 100 on placebo.1 We found no week-by-week weight figure in the US label.

What side effects are common at the start, and is feeling too full one of them?
Mostly, yes. Feeling bloated, belching, heartburn and an upset stomach are on the label’s list of common side effects, alongside nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation.1
Semaglutide delays gastric emptying, meaning food leaves your stomach more slowly. The common list also includes stomach pain, headache, tiredness, dizziness, gas, changes in skin sensation and hair loss.1
In the main pill trial, 74 in 100 people on 25 mg had a gut side effect, against 42 in 100 on placebo.2 Side effects made 6.9 in 100 people on the pill stop, against 5.9 in 100 on placebo.1 Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting can dehydrate you, so the label says to drink fluids.1 There’s more in Guide 5: Side effects and in our answer on constipation.
Can you split or crush the Wegovy pill?
No. The US label says to swallow Wegovy tablets whole, and never to split, crush, chew or dissolve them in any liquid.1
Each strength (1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg) is its own tablet. If a dose is hard to tolerate, the label’s answer is to consider delaying the next step. Your prescriber makes that call. If 25 mg isn’t tolerated, the label says to consider switching to the 1.7 mg Wegovy injection.1
What do people on the Wegovy pill report about starting it?
From public patient forums: 24 Reddit threads in r/WegovyPills, r/WegovyPillWeightLoss, r/wegovyukpills, r/Wegovy, r/WegovyWeightLoss and r/WegovyUK, read in October 2026. Personal reports, not medical evidence.
What people describe
- Matches the label Most say side effects on 1.5 mg were mild. Several say they came back or got worse at a step up, often 4 or 9 mg. The label raises the dose in steps “to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions.”1
- Matches the label Several describe feeling uncomfortably full, bloated or full of burps, and several mention heartburn. All three are on the label’s common list.1
- Not studied Many say they lost little on 1.5 or 4 mg and felt more at 9 or 25 mg. We found no label figure for weight loss on the lower steps; the label reports results only for 25 mg.
- Matches the label Many say cravings and “food noise” dropped. The label says semaglutide lowers calorie intake, likely through appetite.1
- Not studied Several say the tablet tastes bitter, and most replies on it say swallowing it at once with a sip of water helps. We found no study of the tablet’s taste.
Advice people share
- Matches the label Several stress a truly empty stomach and a strict 30-minute wait, and some wait longer. In a label study, more medicine was absorbed after longer waits.1
- Not studied Several say smaller meals, more protein and skipping fried or fatty food eased nausea.
- Label says otherwise Several describe splitting tablets, and many replies warn against it. The label says “Swallow tablets whole. Do not split, crush, chew or dissolve.”1
- Label says otherwise Several describe taking a tablet every other day, or adding an extra lower-strength tablet. The label says one tablet once a day, and “Do not take more than one tablet per day.”1
- Stomach effects are common. In the pill’s main trial, 74 in 100 people on 25 mg had a stomach or gut side effect, against 42 in 100 on placebo.2
- Dehydration and kidneys. Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting can cause dehydration, which may lead to kidney problems, the label says.1
- Pancreas and gallbladder. The label warns of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and gallbladder problems, including gallstones.1
- Thyroid warning. Don’t take Wegovy with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a rare thyroid cancer), or with MEN 2 (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, an inherited condition that causes gland tumors).1
- Other pills. Semaglutide can change how other medicines by mouth are absorbed. With the semaglutide tablet, levels of the thyroid medicine levothyroxine rose 33%.1
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. The label says Wegovy may harm an unborn baby and to stop it 2 months before a planned pregnancy. It also advises against breastfeeding while taking Wegovy tablets.1
If you have severe stomach pain that won’t go away, sometimes spreading to your back, the label says to stop taking Wegovy and call your prescriber right away. Also tell them about nausea, vomiting or diarrhea that keeps going but isn’t severe. Also call them about signs of gallbladder trouble, such as upper belly pain, fever, yellow skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools, or a racing heartbeat at rest that lasts several minutes.
